A lot of internal struggle in sport comes from a battle and avoidance of uncomfortable emotions and thoughts That battle takes attention away from what we care about in the moment The alternative is be open to whatever shows up internally, and commit to an action in the moment

There are no prerequisites to high performance in the moment. You don’t have to manage anxiousness, control thoughts, or reaffirm yourself to get yourself to feel ready. You can just be, and commit to actions while being aware of what is happening internally.

Want to be fearless? Don't bother trying to delete your anxiety. That time is better spent building new habits of courage. Consciously build your reserve of mindfulness, self-compassion & psychological flexibility. We do better building than avoiding.

Attempts to suppress anxiety make it worse. Learning to stabilize your mind & body while you allow anxiety to run its course, liberates you from anxiety. We should be teaching this in schools and broadcasting the solutions 24/7.

My son got a Black Belt last Friday, and showed me once again why so many scientific concepts in the life sciences and psychology are wrong, and why so many of our scientific methods there are misleading. psychologytoday.com/us/blog/…

Having a calm mind is a common goal when performing. A typical approach to accomplishing that is paradoxical, trying to think less only increases thoughts. The focus could actually be placed on the relationship you have to thoughts, instead of the content of your thoughts.

When we are psychologically flexible, we no longer need to judge or evaluate the self as good or bad, because the self is seen as an experiential process rather than a concrete entity.

One of the best parts of aiming at being an authentic coach or teammate across all contexts is that no one on the team ever has to worry about which version of “you” they are going to get.

Acceptance of external and internal stuff is a very different process. Accepting an externally difficult situation won’t make it better, unless we are willing to accept the challenging emotions/thoughts that show up internally during that hard process.

As a teammate/coach you have a privileged view of your teammates/players potential, something they are mostly blind to. Take on the meaningful responsibility of helping them bring forth the athlete and person they could become.

Sound bites and motivational quotes are superficial/surface level psychology. Sport psychology should be promoting work that helps everyone understand the complexity of human nature and how we can make sustainable changes to turn towards a life full of meaning and purpose.

By not trying to stop or change the emotions/experiences/thoughts that show up that we don’t inherently like, we slowly prove to ourselves that we have the courage and strength to move toward what we want even with internal struggle. The opposite of avoidance is acceptance.
When we talk about building the skill of compassion for well-being, we aren’t talking about some lofty spiritual ideal. We are talking about developing the courage and the inner resolve to engage with and do something about the struggles we encounter. And to stop avoiding.

Oftentimes feeling a need to use positive affirmations is an echo of self doubt. Check in to see if you are reacting to doubt and fear, or being proactive and moving towards what/who you care about.
