For decades, the murder of Patrice Lumumba remained one of the defining unresolved crimes of Africa's decolonization era. In March 2026, a Brussels court ordered former Belgian diplomat Γtienne Davignon, then 93, to stand trial over alleged war crimes connected to Lumumba's detention and transfer in 1961. Davignon appealed the decision, but before any trial could take place, he died on May 18, 2026, aged 93. The case was therefore never tried to a verdict.
Lumumba had become the first prime minister of the independent Republic of the Congo in June 1960. His government lasted only months. Amid political turmoil, Cold War rivalry and continued Belgian intervention in Congolese affairs, Lumumba was removed from office and eventually transferred to Katanga, where he was executed on January 17, 1961, alongside Maurice Mpolo and Joseph Okito.
Belgium's involvement in the events surrounding his death has been examined for decades. A Belgian parliamentary inquiry concluded in 2001 that certain Belgian officials bore moral responsibility for the circumstances that led to Lumumba's assassination. The investigation involving Davignon focused not on an accusation that he personally carried out the killing, but on alleged participation in Lumumba's unlawful detention and transfer, degrading treatment and denial of a fair trial.
Davignon's death means there will be no criminal trial of the last surviving Belgian suspect in this case. Yet the legal proceedings still brought renewed attention to a chapter of Congo's history that has never been separated from the legacy of colonialism, foreign intervention and the struggle for African sovereignty.
Lumumba was only 35 when he was killed. More than six decades later, his name remains inseparable from the unfinished questions surrounding Congo's independence and the price paid for demanding genuine political sovereignty.

Johnny Depp's acting "masterclass"
Step 1: Have your lines fed to you in an earpiece
Step 2: Turn up late to set, drunk and cost the studio millions in delays.
Step 3: Blame the woman you abused for your career going down the toilet because of your own unprofessionalism.
Surprise ! l'acteur américain Johnny Depp de passage à Paris, donne ce jeudi une masterclass aux élèves de la #StarAcademy depuis le studio 217, ou ils répètent le prime. ©LeParisien

Black queer people need to support black queer queer films because nobody else will.
Watch a film about a black man who wants to be a giant Octopus and a film about a black trans woman who has to decide between a life with or without the man she loves.

Donβt skip please my friend
We are still left with nothing, without a single donation. Let's set a clear goal: we need to raise $450 to cover my university tuition fees and other essential study expenses, including printing materials and enrolling in educational courses.
Please, don't leave me alone. Every donation, no matter how small, brings me one step closer to continuing my education. β€οΈ
