I've been working on Becoming Mortal *so much* lately, more than I've done in years, and of course Ao3 goes down in a serious way.

Emet quietly realizing that the reason he continuously lives mortal lives is not only to measure their worth or to further a grand scheme, but also because he can obtain something otherwise outside his reach... he can, for a little while, belong to the present.
But he is also aware that he has personal inclinations, attachments, and desires that don't necessarily serve that purpose. He doesn't need to deny those feelings outright. Instead, he finds ways to accommodate them within his existing worldview.
Moments that are inconsequential beside the enormity of his ambitions. Yet they are precisely what make a life feel lived rather than merely endured. Somewhere to go, perhaps someone to return to. A passing afternoon, a quiet conversation.
His sentimentality is not the triumph of emotion over reason. He knows better than to mistake sentiment for reason. Yet he has never quite managed to make himself indifferent to it. Despite everything, his heart endures. And perhaps that is the most human thing about him.
