November 5, 1688. A Dutch fleet of over 400 ships put an army ashore in Devon, and within seven weeks the King of England had fled the country and a foreign prince was running it.
The English call it the Glorious Revolution. In almost any other context you would call it a successful foreign invasion.
And the landing date is not a coincidence. November 5 was already the national Protestant holiday, commemorating deliverance from the Gunpowder Plot. Whether the weather allowed it or William timed it, the propaganda value was enormous and nobody involved missed it.
Here is why it happened.
James II was a Catholic king of a Protestant country, which England had tolerated on one condition, which was that it was temporary. His heirs were his two Protestant daughters by his first marriage, Mary and Anne. The plan was to wait him out.
Then he started putting Catholics into the army and into government office, he suspended laws by royal prerogative, and in 1687 he dismissed Parliament rather than let it block him.
And in June 1688 his second wife gave birth to a son.
That changed everything. A Catholic male heir took precedence over Mary and Anne, and the temporary situation became permanent. A Catholic dynasty, indefinitely.
Thirty days later, seven men signed what is known as the Invitation of the Seven, written in code, telling William of Orange that their condition was worsening and they were less able to defend themselves.
It is worth being precise about that document, because it gets oversold. It did not invite William to take the throne. It was an assurance that if he came, people would rise. Seven signatories out of an entire political nation is not a national mandate, and historians have argued for three centuries about whether it conferred any legitimacy at all.
William's motives were Dutch, not English. France under Louis XIV was the existential threat to the Dutch Republic, and there was a real prospect of England being pulled into a Franco-English alliance against it. An England on his side instead was worth an invasion.
The force he assembled was not a token escort. Around 463 ships, roughly 10,700 regular infantry, 3,660 cavalry with their horses, artillery, about 5,000 volunteers, and over 9,000 crew, with thousands more men aboard. English and Scottish exiles, plus German, Swiss, Swedish and other mercenaries.
That is roughly twice the size of the Spanish Armada a hundred years earlier.
The plan was to land on the east coast. Easterly winds made that impossible, and the same winds that stopped him going east also pinned the Royal Navy in the Thames and let him run down the Channel unopposed. That wind became known as the Protestant Wind.
The fleet came into Torbay and the troops landed at Brixham in Devon on November 5. The infantry was ashore by midnight, the cavalry took two days, and the artillery went round by water to Exeter because the Devon roads were useless.
Then almost nothing happened for a fortnight.
William entered Exeter on November 9 and very few local gentry came in to join him, partly because Monmouth's rebellion in the same part of the country three years earlier had ended with the Bloody Assizes and a lot of executed West Countrymen. People were waiting to see.
Devon nobles came over on November 15. After that it accelerated.
James had around 19,000 men at Salisbury on November 19 and a Royal Army of about 30,000 in total, which on paper was more than enough. He never fought with it.
There was skirmishing, a clash at Wincanton and a fight at Reading on December 7 that left over fifty dead, and that is close to the whole military history of the revolution in England. Ireland and Scotland are a completely different and far bloodier story.
What destroyed James was desertion. His officers went over, his nobles went over, his own daughter Anne went over, and John Churchill, the future Duke of Marlborough, went over. An army whose commanders will not fight is not an army.
James lost his nerve, tried to flee, was caught in Kent, was brought back, and was then deliberately allowed to escape, because William very much did not want a captive anointed king on his hands. He went into exile on December 23.
Dutch troops occupied London until the spring of 1690.
The settlement is where it becomes constitutionally enormous. The Parliament elected in January 1689 decided that James had forfeited the throne by fleeing, which was a legal fiction everyone agreed to use because nobody wanted to say out loud that Parliament had deposed a king.
The Declaration of Right became the Bill of Rights, with royal assent in December 1689. No standing army in peacetime without Parliament's consent, no taxation without Parliament, no suspending laws, free elections, free speech in Parliament, frequent Parliaments.
Most of those claims were not new and had appeared in the Petition of Right in 1628. The genuinely new thing was that the succession itself had been negotiated with Parliament, which killed the divine right of kings in England as a working doctrine.
And then the bill arrived.
Britain got William's war. The Nine Years War started immediately and ran to 1697. Then the War of the Spanish Succession, which I posted about on the 1st, then the War of the Austrian Succession, the Seven Years War, the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. Between 1689 and 1815, Britain was at war with at least one major power in 86 of those 127 years.
Paying for that is what built the modern British state. England copied Dutch financial institutions, the Bank of England was founded in 1694 specifically to fund the war, and the national debt became a permanent instrument rather than an emergency measure. That financial machinery is a large part of why a middling island kingdom ended up running a quarter of the planet.
A Dutch prince landed in Devon on Gunpowder Treason day with 400 ships, and England got a constitution, a central bank and 127 years of war out of it.

Not a big fan of Russell Brand, never have been.
For over 18 years I have been an Investigator assisting alleged miscarriages of justice. One thing I'm not is a Mr Loophole, I've turned down cases and withdrawn my services when I uncover evidence that suggests guilt.
What it comes down to is "consent", if it is non consensual then its an offence, however if the allegations are due to:
1. Regret the following day - "wish I hadnt, it wasn't that great".
2. Financial gain - £22k compensation
3. Revenge - "should have paid for my taxi home" true case I've been involved in.
4. Family court advantage
5. Mental health
6. Guilt - Suddenly remembers they're married, boyfriend, partner
7. Embarrassment - what will friends I was out with say?
All of the above is not r4p3. It is a consensual act.
All I am saying, there's a lot of men right now who must be terrified of their past one night stands and relationships.
I worry for my 19 year old son and can't stress enough there are young women out there looking for a quick £22k payday.
I'm pretty sure there'll be those coming up to Christmas thinking of costs, suddenly remembers they saw him once in a nightclub twenty years ago.

Sir John Cowperthwaite ran Hong Kong's finances from 1961 to 1971 and treated regulation like a tax on discovery. Nobody in government can know which business will work, so he refused to pick, plan, or protect.
Whitehall sent officials to Hong Kong to push for economic statistics, and he sent them home. When Milton Friedman asked in 1963 why he collected so little data, Cowperthwaite answered: "If I let them compute those statistics, they'll want to use them for planning." Numbers give planners a reason to act, and every plan arrives as a rule that tells entrepreneurs what they may not try. Asked what poor countries should do to grow, he said they should abolish the office of national statistics.
He rebuffed tariffs, opposed corporate subsidies, and refused London's push to raise taxes. When a legislator proposed that the government back promising industries, he asked how the government could possibly know which ones those were.
The results arrived without a plan. During his decade as Financial Secretary, real wages rose 50% and the share of residents in acute poverty fell from 50% to 15%. When he took the job, the average Hong Kong resident earned about a quarter of what a Briton earned. By the early 1990s, Hong Kongers out-earned Britons. Britain, the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, planned its economy with ministries full of statisticians and fell behind a rock with no resources except a harbor.
Every regulation assumes a regulator who knows which experiments to allow. That regulator does not exist, so each gate he builds blocks the ideas nobody in the room could have predicted. Hong Kong's most valuable policy was the absence of a gatekeeper.
As far as civil servants go, this guy is the GOAT.

These are the details of Russell Brand's rape conviction:
- Brand met a fan at one of his gigs in 2009 and invited her backstage
- She had a consensual threesome with him - "used her tongue on his anus" "within moments" of meeting him
- Days later Brand invited her to his house for sex, she agrees
- The Times attacks Brand in 2022 for joining Rumble and becoming a right wing "conspiracy theorist"
- The Times and Channel 4 colaborate for a big documentary expose in 2023
- Times says it had the allegations since 2019 but waited until his political shift to release them for some reason
- Complainants for his criminal case all come forward after the doc drops, some contacted and encouraged by journalists
- Jury concludes the woman 17 years ago consented to everything except anal sex, at which point she was raped
- Rape charge is bundled with other sexual assault charges, including him grabbing a woman's breasts (which jury concluded was forced) who then gave him oral sex (which jury found was not forced)
Brand now faces anything from 8 to 15 years in jail.

TERRIFYING: The father of one of Abdul El-Sayed’s major donors and friends was recorded calling for the murder of Jews and declaring that Allah will destroy America.
The man is Salah Sultan, a senior Muslim Brotherhood figure. His son, Mohamed Soltan, who has been publicly defended by Abdul, donated the maximum legally permitted amount to his campaign, and heads a nonprofit that reportedly donated $25,000 to a PAC backing his candidacy.
The recordings are deeply disturbing. Sultan calls for the murder of Israeli diplomats and tourists, accuses Jews of murdering non-Jews for Passover, promotes The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, and invokes Allah’s destruction of America.
Yet Abdul insists that neither he nor his family has any connection to the Muslim Brotherhood, despite all the evidence surrounding the people he associates with, his connections, and those funding his campaign.
Sultan’s direct words:
“Allah is capable of obliterating America. He will deliver a mortal blow when no one is expecting it."

SERIOUS UPDATE REGARDING DANNY TOMMO - Very concerning news from my dad has just come to light.
His case for the incident where he went into the Dover Immigration Facility was due to be heard in Kent Magistrates tomorrow, this has now been moved to Westminster, less than 24 hours before the court hearing with one of the highest profile magistrate judges in the land overseeing the case.
This causes a major safety risk for my father as he has been told he will not be returning to Winchester but will be held in Belmarsh
My dad and my family have had numerous threats to life many of these are from people in that area of the country or people connected to Belmarsh prison itself and this unjustified legal manoeuvre has major implications and potential life threatening repercussions.
I will update you as this situation progresses
Thank you all Shae.

We saw many football clubs pay their respects over the weekend ahead of remembrance Sunday this upcoming weekend 🌹 however for Falkirk yesterday, this was not possible.
Falkirk faced Celtic at home yesterday afternoon but decided to DELAY their remembrance tributes. And we all know why!
With the opponents being who they were, the TV cameras there and previous years of disrespect, we all know what would've happened.
Falkirk next have Hearts away (Sunday 8th November) and then following an international break face St Johnstone on Saturday 21st November which is when they will now have their remembrance tributes.
It is very sad that clubs have to change their plans all because of that one club and their fans who refuse to respect and stay silent for 1 minute and the SFA failing to get a grip of it.

Absolutely bloody shameful. Scotland’s children get one education. When the results expose how badly they are being served, those responsible question the value of measuring them.
Read Lindsay Paterson’s Lessons from Scottish Schools Why Knowledge Matters. His argument is devastating: reforms promoted in the name of equality have weakened attainment and widened inequality.
Neglecting knowledge does particular damage to children who depend on school to provide what their families cannot. There is nothing progressive about leaving them knowing less.
I recognise the pattern from addiction policy. Institutions defend their reputations, while the ministers elected to hold them accountable supply the excuses. Evidence becomes an inconvenience to be explained away. Challenging failure becomes an attack on the supposedly compassionate principles behind it.
It takes extraordinary arrogance to preside over declining standards and widening inequality while still congratulating yourself on your progressive principles.
First they came for the teaching unions.
And I cheered.
Then they came for the rest of the McBlob.
And I cheered again.

A MUST WATCH. 🙏🇬🇧
This priest says what millions of us have been thinking.
"What we've got now is a Church of England that is basically going apostate and denying the faith."
"You have now a King that seems to be kowtowing again to Islam over Christianity."
"He's supposed to be the defender of the Protestant Christian faith."
And he's right. This year's royal finance report quietly dropped "Defender of the Faith" and swapped it for protecting "the space for Faith within the multi-faith nation." Slipped into a report about money, with no announcement.
"He is unravelling the very heart of what makes Britain, Britain."
Watch every second of this. 👇

Polish MEP Dominik Tarczyński is explaining what is happening right now at Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal, calling it nothing less than a COUP D’ÉTAT!
“In Poland, we have a liberal-left government led by Donald Tusk, who is the Prime Minister. What is happening right now with the Constitutional Tribunal is that they want to take it over and fill it with their own people.
Why? Because they want to get rid of the Polish currency, bring us into the eurozone, and eliminate our secure borders. They are being pushed by the Germans, who want to spread the burden of illegal migration and send migrants to Poland.
First of all, the Polish złoty is our constitutionally protected currency. They have to change the Constitution to replace it, and without the Constitutional Tribunal, they cannot do that.
So, number one, they want to get rid of our currency and force us to adopt the euro and join the eurozone. Then they want to take our gold reserves, the largest in the European Union, to Frankfurt, to the European Central Bank, which is a German-based institution.
They also want to open our borders. And they want to make sure that when they lose the next elections, which are coming next year, the Constitutional Tribunal will be unable to do anything to stop their actions or reverse what they have done.
There are many more reasons, but I want you to understand one thing: they are under German influence. They are globalists, and we are fighting not just for Poland, but for Europe.
Be like Poland. Be strong. Our nation is strong, and we are going to win this fight!”

WTF? A Prime Minister who has never run a business in his life demands answers because a private business fails? … let me help you, Andy & co.
A retail chain needs to stay in fashion, needs to go with the flow! … But you and successive governments don’t like their “tat” products (mostly sourced off shore to sell them at £1!!! That the whole point right?) anyway…
for free (without a taxpayer funded £MULTIMILLION enquiry I’ll tell you the problems… (you’re welcome)
▪️massively increased regulations and compliance costs.
▪️cheap tat sourced from abroad, with rising shipping and transport costs.
▪️Hit by increased minimum wages and employer National Insurance.
▪️Hit by rising rents and business rates.
▪️Hit by soaring energy bills and net zero costs.
▪️Hit by higher interest rates.
▪️Hit by consumers with less disposable income.
▪️Hit by the soaring cost of borrowing to buy stock months in advance.
▪️Hit by higher insurance premiums.
▪️Hit by shoplifting, organised theft and security costs.
▪️Hit by packaging taxes, recycling regulations and environmental compliance costs.( which you just throw into general taxation, non of it changes the weather)
▪️Hit by higher fuel, warehousing and distribution costs.
▪️Hit by increased employment costs, pensions and statutory obligations.
▪️Hit by competition from overseas online retailers operating with very different overheads.( duty free … for foreign businesses oops)
▪️And hit by the impossibility of passing those costs onto customers, who shop at Poundland precisely because they need cheap stuff! … which isn’t cheap anymore (see above)
Every single time you add something on … so do they!
And the idiot, deluded politicians who have made Britain more and more expensive and difficult to do business in, are demanding to know why businesses are struggling?
You are all moronic. My work here is done 🤡
