The standard
As part of my commitment to promoting accountability, responsibility, and student-centred leadership across our campuses, I introduced a monthly evaluation of SUG Presidents across the country.
Under this initiative, the SUG President whose activities demonstrate a strong commitment to protecting and advancing the interests of their students will receive a cash reward of ₦500,000.
For the month of October, the Students’ Union Government President of the University of Maiduguri emerges as the recipient of the ₦500,000 award.
Congratulations to the SUG President and the entire leadership of the University of Maiduguri Students’ Union.
This initiative is designed to encourage purposeful leadership, strengthen accountability, and remind every SUG President that the essence of student leadership is to protect the interests and welfare of the students they represent.
Leadership is about impact, not titles.

NANS PRESIDENT.
When your school management announces an increase in tuition fees, the first thing students should do is organise themselves, mobilise, and peacefully shut down the school to register their displeasure.
Put your SUG President at the forefront and collectively demand that management reconsider the decision. Let your voices be heard. Make it clear that students will not accept decisions that affect their welfare without being consulted.
However, my recent experiences engaging with institutions that attempted to increase school fees have been quite disturbing.
In most of these cases, I discovered that some SUG Presidents had already reached agreements with management to support the increment, simply because their own SUG allowances or dues would be increased.
In other cases, management allegedly promised certain SUG leaders personal financial benefits in exchange for their cooperation.
This is unfortunate!
The SUG is established to protect and represent the interests of students, not to negotiate away their welfare for personal benefits.
To every SUG President out there, remember that your loyalty should be to the students who elected you. You cannot collect a mandate from students and use it to bargain against their interests.
Student leadership is a responsibility

WELCOME TO NOVEMBER: A MESSAGE FROM THE NANS PRESIDENT
Great Nigerian Students,
I am thrilled to welcome you all to the new month of November. As like-minded individuals, we have come a long way, remaining formidable and indivisible. It is yet another remarkable opportunity for us to celebrate our resilience as we become engulfed in the euphoria of the new month, the 11th month of the year.
Of course, if we pause, reflect, and ruminate on our journey so far, there is no doubt that our resolve has been tested. We have faced numerous challenges together, from increased tuition fees to dilapidated hostels, as well as oppression and victimisation by those in authority. Regardless of these numerous challenges, I have continued to adequately represent you at every level.
As your President, whenever I look at you, I see possibilities waiting to be explored. I see minds capable of shaping the future, intellects rich with ideas that can transform our society, and brilliant Nigerian students whose creativity holds answers to humanity's most complex challenges. Every time I reflect on the wealth of talent within our student community, I find even greater reasons to be proud of the responsibility I bear as your President.
Fellow Nigerian students, I understand that greatness is not attained by mere desire, nor is success a product of wishful thinking. Our dreams, no matter how beautiful, must be backed by determination, discipline, and consistent effort. I recognise the hopes we carry, the ambitions that keep us awake at night, and the challenges we confront daily in our pursuit of a better future.
The journey may not always be smooth, and the road to success may sometimes appear longer than we anticipated, but the task before us is not beyond our reach.
In this new month, we must continue to learn, build, and keep pushing. We must never surrender to setbacks. If we remain focused, resilient, and committed to our aspirations, the future we desire will not remain a distant dream; it will become a reality we have worked hard to earn.
Happy New Month, Great Nigerian Students!

PRESS STATEMENT
ACHIEVERS UNIVERSITY: NANS APPEALS FOR RECONSIDERATION OF EXPELLED STUDENTS, CONSTITUTES COMMITTEE FOR INTERVENTION
As the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), I wish to express my deep concern over the decision of the management of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, to expel students affected by the financial irregularities that reportedly occurred within the institution a few months ago.
From the information available to us, the unfortunate situation arose when a staff member allegedly collected money from students under the guise of remitting such payments to the university but failed to account for the funds. Consequently, some students who may have made payments in good faith and believed they had fulfilled their financial obligations are now facing the painful prospect of losing their studentship over circumstances that may have been beyond their control.
I consider this development a matter that deserves urgent attention, fairness, and a compassionate approach. While I acknowledge the responsibility of the university management to enforce its financial regulations and maintain institutional discipline, I strongly believe that students who may themselves be victims of alleged financial misconduct should not be made to suffer disproportionately for the actions of others. Every affected student deserves a fair hearing, and each case must be examined on its own merits before a decision with such grave academic consequences is upheld.
In furtherance of my commitment to protecting the welfare, rights, and academic interests of Nigerian students, I am constituting a special intervention committee to be headed by the National Director of Private Institutions Affairs, Comrade Emmanuel Segun Amos. The committee is mandated to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, engage the affected students, review available evidence, and meet with the management of Achievers University to seek a fair, peaceful, and lasting resolution to the matter.
I have charged the committee to approach this assignment with diligence, maturity, and a strong sense of responsibility, ensuring that the facts are properly established and that the interests of all parties are given due consideration. I am confident that through constructive engagement and meaningful dialogue, a resolution can be achieved that protects the future of the affected students without undermining the legitimate authority and regulations of the university.
Consequently, I respectfully appeal to the management of Achievers University to reconsider its decision to expel the affected students and, pending the outcome of the intervention, suspend the implementation of the decision to allow for a thorough and impartial review. I further urge the management to cooperate fully with the committee and consider verifiable evidence of payments, including receipts, transfer records, and other relevant documentation, in determining the circumstances of each student.
Let me make it clear that this intervention is not a call for the university to abandon its financial regulations or excuse genuine outstanding obligations. Rather, it is a call for justice, fairness, and the application of due process. Where students can demonstrate that they made payments in good faith through channels they reasonably believed to be legitimate, their circumstances deserve careful consideration. Equally, any individual found culpable of financial misconduct should be held accountable in accordance with established procedures.
As NANS President, I remain firmly committed to ensuring that the voice of every Nigerian student is heard and that no student is denied a fair opportunity to pursue an education because of circumstances that have not been properly examined. Our responsibility is not merely to speak when students face challenges, but also to take practical steps towards resolving those challenges through engagement, advocacy, and responsible leadership.
I therefore trust that the management of Achievers University will receive this appeal in the spirit in which it is made and work with our committee towards an amicable resolution. The academic future of these students matters, and I believe that justice can be served without compromising the standards and integrity of the institution.

NANS UPDATE ON THE DEATH OF COMRADE ETIMBUK DANIEL, IMMEDIATE PAST SUG PRESIDENT OF AKWA IBOM STATE UNIVERSITY
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) wishes to clarify certain reports circulating in the public space concerning the unfortunate death of Comrade Etimbuk Daniel, the immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of Akwa Ibom State University, who passed away at the NYSC orientation camp in Enugu State.
Following further information available to us, the reported cause of death has been attributed to low blood pressure (Low BP).
We also wish to correct the misleading reports suggesting that his parents were not informed about the incident or that approval was denied for him to be taken to the hospital. Contrary to these claims, his parents were reportedly informed from the beginning of the incident and remained aware of the developments. They were said to have requested that he should not be officially pronounced dead until he was brought back to Akwa Ibom State, a request that was honoured.
Furthermore, we wish to categorically clarify that at no point was the medication administered to Comrade Daniel confirmed to be fake by any doctor. Any report suggesting otherwise is inaccurate and should be disregarded.
We therefore appeal to members of the public, media organisations, student leaders, and the entire student community to take note of these clarifications and refrain from spreading unverified information that could further compound the grief of his family and loved ones.
While we continue to mourn this painful loss, NANS remains committed to ensuring that facts are established and that the dignity of the deceased and the feelings of his family are respected.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, the Akwa Ibom State University community, and the entire Nigerian student community over this irreparable loss.
May God grant his loved ones the strength to bear this painful loss.
May the soul of Comrade Etimbuk Daniel rest in perfect peace.

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY: HONOURING THE BUILDERS OF MINDS AND NATION
Today, as the apex student representative body and the umbrella body for Nigerian students, we celebrate, with great honour and appreciation, our teachers who have committed their lives to building us, shaping our minds and ultimately impacting us with knowledge, values and character.
For us as students, our teachers are our bedrock, our backbone and, undoubtedly, the number one nation builders. They are the ones who stand at the foundation of every profession, every institution and every great society.
Without our teachers, many of us would not be where we are today. They do not merely teach subjects in our classrooms; they inspire dreams, awaken possibilities and prepare generations for the responsibilities that lie ahead. Their classrooms are not just places of learning, but spaces where the future of our nation is continually shaped.
As we mark World Teachers’ Day, we recognise the sacrifices, dedication and commitment of teachers across Nigeria and beyond. We acknowledge the challenges they face and the enormous responsibility placed upon their shoulders in building a knowledgeable, responsible and productive generation.
To every teacher who has taught, mentored, encouraged, corrected and believed in us, we say thank you. Your impact extends far beyond the classroom, and generations yet unborn will continue to benefit from the seeds you have planted.
On this special occasion, we celebrate you, we appreciate you and we honour you.
Happy World Teachers’ Day to our teachers, our mentors, our nation builders and the builders of tomorrow.

NANS CONSTITUTES NANS NATIONAL ELECTION MOBILIZATION, SENSITIZATION AND MONITORING COMMITTEE AHEAD OF 2027 GENERAL ELECTIONS
Great Nigerian Students,
As the apex student representative body with over 40.1 million Nigerian students as members, we constitute a significant voting bloc in the country.
It is noteworthy that we are major stakeholders in nation-building, as students constitute a significant segment of the country's population and are directly affected by government policies and decisions. Hence, we cannot afford to toe the path of apathy or remain indifferent to the democratic process.
As a body of intellectuals and future leaders, we strongly believe that one of the most important ways citizens can contribute to the democratic process is through informed and active participation in elections. Therefore, our firm resolve is to encourage Nigerian students to participate actively and responsibly in the forthcoming 2027 General Elections.
To this end, we hereby constitute the NANS National Election Mobilisation Committee, which shall coordinate the sensitisation, mobilisation and monitoring of student participation and election-related activities across the six geopolitical zones.

NIGERIA AT 66: ABOVE EVERY DIVIDE IS A NIGERIA THAT MUST SURVIVE
Great Nigerian Students,
It is yet another remarkable milestone in our journey as a people and a nation bound together in unity. The beauty of our sovereignty lies in our continued unity despite our diverse tongues, religions and ethnicities.
Great Nigerian Students, today, we must celebrate our sovereignty, resilience and resolve as a nation, the largest Black nation in the world. Our colour does not define us; our unity in diversity is what makes us formidable as a people. Thus, we must continue to celebrate our shared heritage, the Nigerian state.
It has been 66 years since independence, with our flag flying high. On this day, as we celebrate, we must also reflect on our journey as a nation, which has spanned over six decades. It is also patriotic to use this opportunity to honour our heroes past who gave their all for the freedom we enjoy today.
Great Nigerian Students, as major stakeholders in nation-building and those upon whom the future of this country rests, let us continue to uphold the ideals that unite us regardless of our religion or ethnicity. Above every divide is a Nigeria that must survive.
Happy Independence Day to all Nigerian Students. Let us keep the flag flying high and remain committed to one Nigeria.

PRESS RELEASE
IBBU LAPAI CLOSURE: NANS PRESIDENT ORDERS NATIONAL MOBILIZATION, RELOCATES HQ TO NIGER STATE
I have acknowledged the statement issued by the Coordinator of the NANS North Central Zone C, Comr. Abiola Azeez Babatunde, concerning the prolonged closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, Niger State, and I wish to state in all clear term that I align myself with the concerns, demands and position expressed therein.
As the President of NANS, I owe it as a duty to ensure no Nigerian Student remains at home while their academic future is placed on hold. And it must also be stated that the students of IBBU Lapai are not responsible for the circumstances that have led to the prolonged disruption of academic activities, yet they continue to bear the consequences.
This is unacceptable and its no longer an issue that can be treated as an ordinary disagreement between Government, ASUU and other Stakeholders, because at the centre of this crisis, are Nigerian students whose academic calendars, plans and aspirations are being disrupted.
Let it be known, that this decision was born after all attempt to consult and consolidate has failed .
To this end, I stand firmly with the students of IBBU Lapai and fully support the call by the NANS Zone C Coordinator for the Niger State Government to immediately engage all relevant stakeholders and hold a genuine, progressive and productive dialogue towards resolving the issues responsible for the continued closure of the institution. There must be a clear and time bound pathway towards reopening the school.
While that is in motion, NANS as a pressure group will not sit by and watch, neither will I abandon the students of IBBU Lapai at a time when their voices require national attention. I therefore direct all structures of NANS across the country to immediately prepare for mobilization down to Niger State,as we shall be relocating the National Headquarters of the association down to the state on 1st October, 2026 and untill all issues are resolved, we shall remain there.
I owe a duty to Nigerian Students and I will continue to discharge that responsibility with courage and an unwavering commitment to their legitimate interests.

NANS CALLS FOR URGENT RESOLUTION OF NUC-SURCON ACCREDITATION DISCREPANCIES, URGES PROTECTION OF AFFECTED STUDENTS
I have received several complaints and concerns from students of Surveying and Geo-informatics at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), regarding the uncertainty surrounding the accreditation and professional recognition of their programme.
As the apex representative body of Nigerian students, I consider this situation a matter that deserves urgent attention, particularly because the students affected are the ones ultimately exposed to the consequences of any unresolved regulatory disagreement.
I understand that there are existing differences regarding the respective roles of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON) in relation to academic accreditation, professional standards and the regulation of Surveying programmes.
However, whatever discrepancies may exist between these regulatory bodies must not be allowed to create uncertainty for students who have already committed several years of their lives, resources and academic efforts to their chosen profession. Students should not be made to suffer for disagreements between these bodies.
The National Universities Commission and the Surveyors Council of Nigeria are important regulatory and professional bodies with responsibilities that affect the quality, credibility and professional relevance of education in Nigeria. It is therefore imperative that both bodies engage constructively and urgently with a view to resolving whatever issues exist between them.
A student who enrolled in a programme approved and offered by a recognised university should not suddenly be left uncertain about the status of that programme or the implications of the regulatory process for his or her future career.
Therefore, we call on the National Universities Commission and the Surveyors Council of Nigeria to urgently sit together and resolve their differences in the best interest of Nigerian students.
Furthermore, we call for clear and timely communication to the affected students and the Federal University of Technology, Akure, so that students can have certainty regarding the status of their programme, their academic progression and their professional future.
As the apex student representative body, we will continue to stand firmly for the protection of the rights, welfare and interests of Nigerian students.
Therefore, we urge the NUC and SURCON to place the interests of the students at the centre of their engagement and urgently arrive at a sustainable resolution.

PRESS RELEASE
NANS COMMENDS MINISTER OF INTERIOR’S PROACTIVE RESPONSE TO NIGER STATE TRAGEDY, COMMISERATES WITH NIGER STATE STUDENTS’ COMMUNITY AND FAMILIES OF 37 VICTIMS
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) commiserates with the Government and good people of Niger State, particularly the Niger State Students’ Community, over the tragic loss of 37 lives in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna.
We are particularly devastated by the loss of two students in this unfortunate incident. Their deaths are not only a painful loss to their families and loved ones, but also a grievous loss to the Nigerian student community and our nation at large. We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families, colleagues, friends and the entire Niger State Students’ Community at this difficult moment.
While the circumstances surrounding the deaths are still subject to investigation, NANS commends the proactive and decisive steps taken by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in responding to this unfortunate incident.
By promptly taking steps to ensure that officers connected to the incident are suspended pending investigation and by constituting an independent investigative committee to establish the facts, determine responsibility and recommend appropriate action, the Honourable Minister has demonstrated a clear commitment to accountability and respect for human life.
Apparently, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has once again distinguished himself as an exceptional public servant who understands that public office comes with responsibility and accountability to Nigerians. At this difficult and controversial moment, when Nigerians seek answers to the tragic loss of 37 lives in NSCDC custody, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has shown empathy, commitment to justice and unbiasedness in seeking the truth and ensuring that those found culpable are held accountable in accordance with the law.
Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has further demonstrated his unflinching commitment to broader reforms and his unprecedented stewardship at the Ministry of Interior. He is no doubt the kind of leader and public servant Nigerians have always yearned for.
For us, this is what responsible leadership requires: the courage to own responsibility, the willingness to confront issues when necessary, and the commitment to protect the lives and rights of Nigerians, regardless of status.
We therefore commend the Honourable Minister for his proactive disposition and urge the investigative committee to discharge its mandate with complete independence, transparency and diligence. We equally call for justice for the deceased and accountability for any individual found to have acted negligently, unlawfully or in breach of the fundamental rights of the victims.
As the most formidable pressure group in the country that serves as an oversight body, we will continue to stand for fairness, equity and justice. We shall also continue to advocate for a system in which every Nigerian, irrespective of status or background, is treated with dignity.
May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may God grant their families and loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.
