My PhD lab has done so much research on this over the years, and I really think more people should try it! If you work on a crop that has a high UV tolerance, that gap b/w what kills the pathogen vs harming the plant is likely to be even larger...AKA a very promising opportunity!
UV light can destroy the fire blight-causing bacteria that is devastating 🍎. In lab & orchard field tests, 2 nighttime applications of UV light to apple trees in bloom achieved the same effect as the strongest biopesticides & antibiotics. @plantdisease cals.cornell.edu/news/2023/1…

A lot of my friends have just stopped talking to me because they feel guilty talking about their lives while my whole social life, apart from work, has been on hold since March 2020. And that's a whole extra thing to grieve about. 1/7

I don’t normally share much online these days but I had to with this one!
So I’m doing my usual day-to-day grocery shopping at my local Tescos and this lady comes to me and says ‘Hi I’m sorry but could you help me out with picking an item from the top shelf?’

I’m getting this PhD and I am not looking for a tenure track position after. But academia likes to reproduce academia so there’s not much guidance for people who want to use their PhD for other things. Here to remind myself and anyone else out there: we can do other things.
