My manager told me on my first day, "Reply to every email within one hour. No exceptions." I said, "Understood."
That night, at 2:14 AM, an email came in from her. Subject: "Q3 numbers." I replied at 2:31 AM.
At 3:05 AM, another one. I replied at 3:20 AM.
This went on for two weeks. Emails at 1:17 AM. 4:02 AM. Once at 4:52 AM. I replied to every single one within the hour.
I was a zombie. My wife said "You're going to get sick." I said "It's my first corporate job, I can't lose it."
On Monday, she called me into her office. She had all 37 of my replies printed out on her desk. Every timestamp circled in red pen.
My heart was beating out of my chest.
