Pardon our progress! If you’ve been riding by the Bertie County Schools Central Office and wondering, “What in the world is going on over there?!” We’re clearing the way for something better.

Congratulations to Jorge Paredes Sanchez and Sophia Labordo, recipients of the Superintendent’s Award at the BHS Graduation Ceremony. Presented by Dr. Otis L. Smallwood, this prestigious award recognizes students with the highest GPAs in the graduating class.
Did you know students can lose some of the progress they made during the school year if they stop reading over the summer? It's called the Summer Slide. Watch this fun video from our C&I Team. Press play to join us in stopping the Summer Slide!
Bertie County Public Schools is making history—and we’re just getting started. These aren’t just numbers… this is progress and a focus on what matters most—our students. We are proud of the work happening across our district.
Student Success… Every Day… No Excuses!
Let’s congratulate our March Bertie Alumni Spotlight — Hughstin Battle! A proud Bertie High School Class of 2017 graduate, Hughstin Battle is making his mark as the Owner and Executive Chef of Hughstin Battle’s Kitchen @ Metro Lounge in Ahoskie, NC!
Congratulations on being named the Bertie Alumni Spotlight for January 2026! Your success proves that greatness can rise from anywhere.
We look forward to coming together in unity and purpose as we uplift the students and families of Bertie County.
Wishing our students, families, staff, and community a year filled with success, joy, and new opportunities.
During the monthly Principals’ Meeting, the Principals surprised Superintendent Dr. Otis L. Smallwood with a special Christmas gift. We appreciate Dr. Smallwood’s leadership and the dedication of his team, who work daily to support Student Success — Every Day, No Excuses.
District officials are actively monitoring the weather and road conditions. If there are any changes to school operations, families and staff will be notified promptly.
Out of an abundance of caution due to the possibility of inclement weather, all Bertie County Public Schools will release students at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow, December 8.
Families are encouraged to plan accordingly and continue to watch for official updates.
Congratulations to our December Alumni Spotlight, Dr. Hal Holloman, a 1988 graduate of Bertie High School.
Today, I traveled around our district to ask students and staff one simple question: “What are you thankful for?” Their answers were sweet, honest, funny, and filled with gratitude.
Happy Thanksgiving from the BCS Family!

Dr. Smallwood took a moment to honor one of our own — Miss Cooper, affectionately known by her students as Super Coop — by delivering flowers in recognition of her strength and survivorship. I do not own the rights to the music in the video.
