UK braced for what could be the largest solar storm in over two decades.
📽️ Animation of SOHO LASCO Coronograph imagery showing the coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with the X5 solar flare. The scintillation is due to energetic particles hitting the sensor (NASA/ESA).

Next 48 hrs - STORM. Expecting two incoming coronal mass ejections ( CME ) from two filament eruptions over the last weekend. These predicted to arrive later today or early on 16. STORM periods are likely to follow.

There are confirmed sightings of the aurora around the UK right now. If you have clear skies in your area then look up and you might just get a display of the Northern Lights to welcome in 2025!

Next 24 hrs - ACTIVE. Two Coronal Mass Ejections are heading our way and could increase geomagnetic activity up to STORM G2 levels with a slight chance of isolated STORM G3 periods.

Keep your eyes to the sky tonight: we're seeing signals of a G4 (out of 5) geomagnetic storm, which means chances of seeing the aurora are good, assuming clear skies. The best time to see them is late PM to the early hours of tomorrow.

UPDATE Next 24 hrs-STORM. The Earth's magnetic field is experiencing a strong connection with the solar wind, giving rise to STORM conditions. Whether current activity will sustain into the evening remains uncertain. Visit shorturl.at/ch7n2 for current geomagnetic activity.

Last week's aurora was truly spectacular, with sightings of the display all over the UK.
BGS geoscientists have confirmed that it was was one of the most extreme and long-lasting geomagnetic storms recorded in the last 155 years.

Next 24hrs-ACTIVE. There are 3 CMEs on the way that might hit us with a glancing blow in the next 24 hours. If they all hit we're likely to see increased activity. We could get some STORM periods tonight & tomorrow, particularly if they combine on the way or arrive close together

Update (3): Solar wind speed remains moderately elevated, but it is looking less likely that we will see the anticipated geomagnetic enhancement. ACTIVE conditions remain possible overnight, but the chance of even a brief period of STORM G1 is declining, although never say never!

Update (2): It's possible that the bulk of this CME has passed south of Earth, given the location of the active region responsible and partial-halo CME. Minor storm conditions (G1-G2) still possible in the next 24 hours but any chance of seeing STORM G3 is declining.

Update (1): Brief STORM G1 last night possibly due to glancing blow from CME on the 26th. The anticipated CME on the 28th has thus far failed to deliver. A small shock and modest increase in solar wind speed could indicate that it arrived this morning. ACTIVE spells currently.

Next 72hrs - STORM G3 likely later on Saturday or early Sunday due to CME arrival associated with an X1.0 flare from centrally located active region on Sun's southern hemisphere. Storm conditions expected to continue through the end of the weekend. Should be QUIET today though.

Next 24H ACTIVE. The influence of a coronal hole has reached Earth this morning. This, combined the the direction of the inperplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is the recipe for activity! we even may reach a STORM G1 !

Fantastic #Aurora from the Isle of Skye this evening. This shot straight out of the camera. Storm still ongoing, so If you've got clear skies get outside and have a look! @VirtualAstro @BBCHighlands @BBCScotWeather

Next 72hrs - STORM! The high speed stream from a large, recurrent coronal hole is anticipated to arrive later today. Periods of STORM G1 are expected and some occasional STORM G2 is thought likely over the next few days.
