this is strangely heartwarming: the canadian pediatrics association now recommends that children engage in risky play—"thrilling and exciting forms of free play that involve uncertainty of outcome and a possibility of physical injury"—because of benefits e.g. to mental health

If you’ve followed Sycamore’s work on this topic, many of the key points the senators made in their report will sound VERY familiar…
A new report from a bipartisan group of Tennessee state senators draws extensively on the Sycamore Institute’s analyses and testimony about federal funding for K-12 education in our state. Read more: ⬇️ bit.ly/48DMMQO

There’s one proven way to make the East Bank “Nashville’s Next Great Neighborhood.” Let it develop organically over time (preferably by hundreds of small developers).
Ben is joking (for the most part) about the insufferableness, but he's on point that it's reeeeally hard for a single developer to create an entire community without dampening its soul. No matter how well designed things are, they're exactly that: "designed". Disney has unlimited resources and Celebration FL still has a bit of Truman Show vibe. Jim Rouse was one of our greatest developers and even his Columbia MD took decades to get a personality. DMB is the best master-planned developer on the planet and their most appealing projects are the custom home projects where individuals create their own homes. For vibes, "master planned" can't compete with "spontaneously evolved". The best places unfold sequentially - one building leading to another - a coffee shop next to a bus stop then a studio with a patio in back leads to fixing up the house next door leads to a few townhomes leads to a warehouse conversion leads to galleries and tacos then a small commercial core then apartments and a hotel etc. When a series of individual actors each react to a previous improvement places come alive. Darn near impossible to create by force.

By losing his purpose, he lost his essence, his spirit. The thing that gave him his joie de vivre. He had surmounted his biggest challenge and achieved his singular goal. And there was nothing on the other side.
