In conjunction with Dr. Meredith Wills, Insider found evidence MLB used three distinct baseballs in 2022.
The balls show up in distinct places in our sample.
Oh! A player got a stern warning from the league for trying to help.

The Brewers are probably the most interesting case study in this research to me. Across 330 MLB team-seasons, the offensive profiles most consistently associated with outperforming talent were pretty clear (trigger warning for doomers) chase less, pull the baseball, and keep it off the ground.
Yet Milwaukee has now put together consecutive seasons significantly outperforming its estimated offensive talent (+17 R+ in 2025, +20 in 2026) while leaning into an opposite-field, ground-ball-heavy approach.
Are the Brewers actually finding a repeatable way to extract more offensive production from their players through coaching, approach, and deployment? Or are we observing something that works with this particular roster but isn't necessarily sustainable across multiple roster cycles?
I think we spend a lot of time identifying what successful organizations do differently, but not nearly enough time separating what is genuinely repeatable from what is simply working right now. Two seasons of overperformance are worth paying attention to. But if we're trying to identify a sustainable organizational advantage, I'd want to see whether that production continues as the roster changes, and whether newly acquired hitters consistently outperform their own historical baselines.
Regardless, super cool to see what Milwaukee has accomplished!

That’s Congressional Award Recipient Chris Brown to you!
Chris Brown has been sentenced to eight months in prison (suspended for 12 months) in relation to a “vicious and unprovoked” attack at a London nightclub in 2023.
In July, Brown pleaded guilty to a count of affray at London’s Southwark Crown Court for attacking a music producer with a tequila bottle on the head.

Yesterday's Athletic piece glossed over its own data that, over a 5-year period, the correlation between payroll and wins is 31%. Anyway, now I think I'll read this piece from the same publication about how much money matters in college football. nytimes.com/athletic/interac…
