create more than you consume. consuming isn’t the problem. mindlessly feeding your brain bullshit is. consume with intention, then go make something. protect your attention like you’d protect your money.

Focusing too much on how things “should” be will literally ruin your life. You gotta at least see things for what they ARE so you can change accordingly.

You aren't going to get lucky repeating the same day. You need to go on more side quests. Weekly. Daily if you can. Even one tiny new decision can substantially increase your chances at luck.

DESIGN EVERYTHING A very common question I hear from young creators is, “How do I find my style?” In other words, illustrators and designers want to define a signature look and feel. I fundamentally disagree with the premise of that question. As designers, we’re hired to be adaptable. Each client, brand, and project should have its own unique voice. And if you’re early in your career, you’re still learning. Why limit yourself to one look and feel? Practice across styles and applications. If you want your work to show up everywhere, design everything.

The poetry is in the friction. The meaning is found meandering. The joy is getting a little lost and finding your way back again. The heart longs for serendipity. Autopilot is the death of purpose. Drone life is not something to be revered or celebrated.

In Chinese we have an idiom 画蛇添足 (adding legs to a painting of a snake) which refers to when someone adds unnecessary embellishments to a piece of work that deviate from the original intent, thus ruining it in the process.

No offence to all Designers who read it. But seeing ChatGPT 3D icons in all my feed... Can I remind you that most of the time, the path is way more fascinating than the results. It's an amazing thing to be a designer. Curious, making your own mistakes. Do it ugly, but yours.

I would caution against and designer gatekeeping what is “art” is. Defend originality, hard work, intellectual property and taste instead. AI prompting diminishes all of that.

Miyazaki spent his entire life building one of the most expansive and imaginative bodies of work, all so you could rip it off and use it as a filter for your vacation photos. Not into this one bit. Protect artists.

Since Studio Ghibli is trending, worth noting the mind-boggling effort Hayao Miyazaki and his team put into a film. Each has 60k-70k frames, all hand-drawn and painted with water color. This 4-second clip (“The Wind Rises”) took one animator 15 months to do. In the documentary “10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki”, the legendary Japanese filmmaker talks to one of his animators (Eiji Yamamori) after they complete the crowd scene. The exchange is gold: ▫️Miyazaki: “Good job.” ▫️Yamamori: “It’s so short, though” ▫️Miyazaki: “But it was worth it.” The animator gets a second of joy (he’s pumped) but on to the next. *** Link to doc: www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/s…
