Reading through the OBR report, found this fascinating nugget given the current hysteria over benefits and disability support: welfare spending is actually 1.2% lower as a share of GDP than it was in 2012/13.

Patrick Stewart was, like many of the greatest British artists of the 20th Century, a working class boy who became a world-class artist thanks to a public arts education made possible by Post War social democracy. He never forgot it.

It always happens. Inside information is how the City got so wealthy!
New: Dame Meg Hillier, Labour chair of the commons treasury select committee, tells MPs she is to write to the Financial Conduct Authority to see if there was a leak of market sensitive information around the Budget. Hillier is intervening after bank shares rose before the chancellor started speaking. In his budget John Healey announced a lower than expected increase in bank tax

We’ve given Palantir so much money and made ourselves so dependent on them that apparently we have to keep throwing cash at them forever more. Stop this madness. Terminate the contracts. ft.com/content/5c237fb3-23ba…

Why should you care about rate rigging among oil tanker companies? Because the market for oil supertankers is dominated by a few powerful companies that have made huge profits from the Iran war - and you've paid the price at the pump. graceblakeley.substack.com/p…

They have helped Big Pharma to fleece us, at a huge cost to our NHS and patients’ well being. It’s only delivering for the profits of corporate giants. Rip up this toxic deal.
Good to speak with the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care @YvetteCooperMP. The U.S.-UK pharmaceutical deal is delivering - driving investment and expanding NHS access to life-saving medicines. There is much more to do, and I look forward to building on this progress for the benefit of both our countries.

My position is that IP rights should protect labor and not finance. So authors and artists and engineers should have much stronger protections and financiers and in big business should have much weaker protections. Also ip should incentivize production. That’s the gist.

It is not simply movements in financial markets - it's the Bank of England, the financialisation of our pensions and DMO issue of inflation-linked gilts that also matter. Blaming the 'market' obscures political choices that make our debt dynamics more exposed to global forces

0.1% of people on the planet emit more CO2 than the poorest 3.5 billion people combined. One year’s worth of emissions from the top 1% will result in an estimated 1.3 million excess deaths from extreme heat. Just a few stats from Oxfam's incredible new report.
Natural disasters aren’t natural. A storm doesn’t decide who has insurance, savings or somewhere safe to go. People built the systems that leave others exposed. People can change them. Read #DisasterDivide: oxfam.org/en/research/disast… #ClimateJustice #MakeRichPollutersPay

A 3% extra temporary bank surcharge is rather feeble given the astronomical scale of the profits UK banks have been making - the big four made £29bn in the first six months of 2026 alone. #Budget2026

I have been detained by Israeli security forces all day. Along with with MPs @labourlewis, @larabirdsnp, MSP Kate Nevans, former MP @SamTarry and campaigners from across the world, we were turned back because they don’t want anyone seeing their ethnic cleansing.

1/The National Audit Office is to investigate the cost of the government’s drug pricing deal with Trump, after six committee chairs demanded answers. The BMJ reports it could mean 229,000 excess deaths over a decade, with £45bn diverted from NHS services. bmj.com/content/395/bmj-2026…

Private equity buys UK fertility clinics. PE controls social care, hospitals, GP surgeries, dentistry, child fostering. Usual business model. High debt, quality of care declines, prices increase, high profits. When things go wrong, NHS has to step in. thebusinessdesk.com/northwes…

This would be a HUGE deal. Climate scientists and senior campaigners were privately ‘okay’ about Jackdaw: it’s gas, and small. Rosebank is oil, and far larger. A real red line. No way this happens when Greens were polling 20%.
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham and John Healey are set to force the approval of Rosebank despite the Energy Secretary's reluctance Minister: "Both Andy and John have decided Rosebank needs to go ahead. The economic and energy security case is so strong" [@DPJHodges]

The outcome of Brazil’s election has consequences far beyond Brazil. If Lula wins, we are one step closer to preserving Earth’s largest rainforest. If Flávio Bolsonaro wins, we risk a return to the policies that drove deforestation up under his father.
