In Fahrenheit 451, the chief book-burner, Captain Beatty, describes how reading became obsolete because the public demanded increasingly fast-paced entertainments, and those entertainments slowly corroded their ability to think. “Books cut shorter. Condensations. Digests, tabloids. Everything boils down to the gag, the snap ending. Classics cut to fit fifteen-minute radio shows, then cut again to fill a two-minute book column … Many were those whose sole knowledge of Hamlet was a one-page digest in a book that claimed, ‘Now at last you can read all the classics.’ … School is shortened, discipline relaxed, philosophies, histories, languages dropped, English and spelling gradually neglected, finally almost completely ignored. Life is immediate, the job counts, pleasure lies all about after work. Why learn anything save pressing buttons, pulling switches?” In this passage Ray Bradbury foretells the intellectual hollowing out of the working class, the advent of AI-generated “summaries” of classic novels, the attention-frying culture of short-form video, the relaxation of educational standards into non-existence. All of this in a book published in 1953.
Starting to really understand why a core theme of dystopian novels is that nobody reads

Millions of Paraguayans have lost their savings due to the collapse of a bank involved in corrupt deals orchestrated by right-wing President Santiago Peña. His daughter attends Columbia University in the US and wears a shirt saying "tax the poor".

Paraguay’s president has just resigned
Mensaje del Presidente de la República, Santiago Peña, al pueblo paraguayo.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
191). bacn.gov.py/leyesparaguaya…

And now let’s turn to the crowd for their reaction
Tonight wasn’t the night our campaign had hoped for. To everyone who stood alongside us, gave your time, and believed in what we set out to accomplish, thank you. I will never forget your dedication, your friendship, and, above all, your love for the great state of Texas. As Thomas Jefferson once wrote, “I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.” My dreams for Texas and America remain undiminished, as does my faith in the indomitable spirit of the people of the Lone Star State. I’m not going anywhere — because we have work to do. Onward.

Mamdani went undercover at the New York City marathon passing out water and congratulating runners on the route. This may seem harmless but it is actually an extension of the practices of the fifth leader of the Abbasid caliphate Harun al-Rashid (786–809 CE) who would go into the city in disguise in order to assess the unguarded sentiments of his subjects. #Mamdanistan

We talk a lot about how Vivek’s ad doomed his campaign. But politics aside, his campaign retraumatized a whole family. That is going to be his mark on politics. And JD Vance defended it
Amy Acton's stepfather's surviving biological daughter spoke to The Daily Mail when they knocked on her door in Ohio, while sobbing. She said: She believed Amy's story, because her father raped her sister more than once (the victim in this 1974 indictment); she remembered Amy lived in a tent with Donna and Cledith; it's been terrible for her family to see Vivek's ad run in Ohio; and she heard rumors her father had victimized even more young girls.
