I think you were correct as a matter of etymology, but with statutory changes and common usage, blurring the lines between someone who has studied the law and who is licensed to practice it, the distinction no longer holds.

Nowadays, approximately 94% of U.Va. law graduates never take the bar exam of Virginia. Might that change with the uniform bar exam's ongoing proliferation into more states? Stay tuned... Most recent alumni took the D.C. or New York bar exams.
