2 of 2 Apple bought NeXT in 1996. Jobs returned to the company he had co-founded. The operating system that had continued to develop through the intelligence years went with him. Dain Ehring, who had worked on the contract from the intelligence side and later joined NeXT, has said the runway allowed Jobs to mature as a manager before the return. Other capital and other decisions also kept the company going. The reporting does not claim the CIA order was the only reason NeXT lasted. It does record that the order arrived when commercial sales were insufficient, that it was large, that it was deliberately hidden, and that the people closest to it describe it as the period that let Jobs reach 1996 with a company and a software foundation still intact. And you have Apple one way or another because Steve Jobs had to get a top secret clearance. wsj.com/tech/steve-jobs-appl…

Steve Jobs told told the CIA contact not to tell him anything he was not supposed to know, because he would not remember to forget it. Read the rest of the story below:
How The CIA Gave Steve Jobs A Top Secret Clearance And Helped Him Return To Apple Two men from the CIA’s Program B walked into NeXT headquarters in 1986 without an appointment. Joe Romello and Jeff Harris wanted to talk with Steve Jobs about defense-related issues, specifically intelligence. They could not say more. The Cold War was still open, and the agency needed better machines to turn satellite photographs into usable information for the National Reconnaissance Office. Jobs had left Apple the year before. He had founded NeXT and, in February 1986, bought the graphics group from Lucasfilm that became Pixar. That group had already built a specialized computer with ESL, a Silicon Valley defense contractor, for analysts who examined reconnaissance images. ESL’s president, Robert Kohler, was a former senior CIA officer. He later told Jobs that the work NeXT’s machines were meant to do for students and researchers was close to what intelligence analysts did behind closed doors. Romello asked how many workstations NeXT could ship in a year. Jobs called the number privileged. Romello answered that he wanted 20,000 units that year, with two changes: a faster Motorola chip and a special graphics card from Intel. NeXT would not perform the modifications. The agency would handle them afterward through intermediaries. Jobs told Romello not to tell him anything he was not supposed to know, because he would not remember to forget it. The purchase was recorded under the National Security Agency’s name. Even inside the government the CIA’s role stayed quiet. Publicly, NeXT described a federal contract run through ESL. The machines left the factory unfinished. Unmarked trucks collected them from the NeXT warehouse in the early morning and carried them to a CIA front company. There the chips and graphics processors were installed. The completed units moved to Moffett Field, where C-5 aircraft flew them to classified destinations. Production scaled with help from a Sun Microsystems team that understood intelligence work. Output rose from roughly a hundred machines in the first month to 1,500, then to 5,000 a month. Analysts at the National Reconnaissance Office used the workstations to examine satellite imagery of military movements and missile-site construction and to prepare briefings that could reach members of Congress or the president. Jobs later received a Top Secret SCI clearance so he could enter the facilities and, at times, lecture at the CIA. Department of Defense documents released years afterward confirm that the clearance was active from 1988 into 1990 and was tied in part to Pixar’s contracts for rendering reconnaissance data. He still did not receive the full operational picture of what the modified NeXT machines were doing. NeXT’s commercial market had stayed thin. The computers were powerful and carefully designed, and they cost more than most universities wanted to pay. Ross Perot had invested, yet sales lagged. The intelligence order supplied volume at the moment the company needed it. People who worked on the contract and people inside NeXT later told reporter Sharon Weinberger that the purchases gave Jobs several years to run a real business, refine the operating system, and show he could manage more than product design. NeXTSTEP became the base of what Apple later called Mac OS X and, after that, the foundation for the software that runs the company’s later devices. Weinberger first heard a version of the story from a former DARPA director who described an NSA purchase that had kept NeXT alive. She spent years following the claim. The NSA name was the cover. The customer was the CIA’s satellite program. Interviews with former CIA officers and with people who had worked at NeXT produced the same account of the scale of the order and its effect on the company’s survival. 1 of 2

When nobody else celebrates you, learn to celebrate yourself. When nobody else compliments you, then compliment yourself. It’s not up to other people to keep you encouraged. It’s up to you. Encouragement should come from the inside! ~Joel Osteen #RozSpirations

I am living this right now... It's been so long since I worked in Photoshop, a program I used daily, that I am floundering around doing simple stuff, but I AM getting there. ;) [I needed to make some (inspirational) inserts for my daily Success Journal and my Gratitude Journal. I am working on the Journals for November and December. [Well I got it done, but I'll need to adjust them for the next batch! ;) [AND, maybe do a little each day to get back in the swing! ;) In the end, it was fun and I GOT IT DONE! Being Flexible and Being Willing to Start Over and brush us when necessary, IS BETTER THAN throwing your/my hands up and giving up! AND... It's VERY satisfying! ;) ~Roz Fruchtman aka #RozSpirations AND, getting back in the swing IS... helping me revise some of my @RozSpirations, as I inspire and mentor myself! ;) Celebrate you Imperfections Your Imperfections, Sometimes... I am very grateful Aleksander accepted our request to come take this on; the safety and security challenges in front of us as we confront superintelligence are immense, and he has an excellent set of skills to work on this.
Personal update: Turns out that what I thought was leaving OpenAI became more of a sabbatical. When I left a few months ago, I felt that the most important thing to focus on was making AI more useful to people. But we’ve since entered a different regime of AI progress. One in which getting the safety and security challenges of increasingly capable AI right has to become a central priority. So I’ll be returning to OpenAI, joining @merettm to help chart a path through these challenges. There’s much work to do, so let’s get going.

Here's an AI tip I wish more people knew. Stop choosing your favorite AI model based solely on benchmarks. Instead, give different models the SAME task using something from your actual work. Then compare: Which gave you the most useful answer? Which needed the least editing? Which understood your instructions best? @DustinWStout recently shared a great one-week testing approach on the @HeyMagai blog. magai.co/best-ai-assistant/

OpenAI recently updated ChatGPT Voice with GPT-Live-1.1. But here's something I encourage people to try with Voice. Instead of treating it like a search engine, use it as a brainstorming partner. Talk through a problem. Explain what you're working on. Ask it to challenge your thinking. Sometimes having a conversation is much easier than trying to write the perfect prompt. help.openai.com/en/articles/…

👨‍🍳 Chef's Tip! 🥧 For a delicious chicken pot pie casserole, keep the filling creamy and thick, not watery, so the biscuits bake up beautifully golden. Are you team biscuits or traditional pie crust? 👇

Parts of the Albuquerque Metro are still expected to see their first freeze of the season TONIGHT! The best chance for freezing temperatures will be along the Rio Grande, West Mesa, Foothills, and East Mtns. The rest will likely stay just 1° or 2° above freezing. #NMwx
