August 3, 1995. The Source Awards in New York City. OutKast had just won Best New Rap Group, but the room did not exactly welcome them with open arms. As André 3000 and Big Boi stepped up to accept the award, the crowd booed. At the time, hip-hop was caught between the East Coast and West Coast, and Southern rap was often treated like it had something to prove.
André did not give a long speech. He barely had time to say much at all. But then he delivered the line that would follow Southern hip-hop for years: “The South got something to say.”
