Back when I was in Jos, Barkin Ladi LGA, there was a boy named Joseph. He had just been called up to the state football team. Everyone knew he had talent, and it was the kind of opportunity that could change his whole life.
He worked at a small local factory to support himself. Nothing fancy just carrying sacks and doing rough jobs to make ends meet.
Then one girl Zainab, a Muslim accused him of rape. Joseph was Christian. In Jos, with the tension that already exists, that made the crowd even angrier. Before he could defend himself, people gathered and pounced. They beat him with sticks, stones, fists. It was jungle justice. His legs the same legs that earned him that state call-up were smashed.
The police eventually came, pulled him out, and rushed him into treatment. But the treatment wasn’t done properly. His legs never healed right. His football career was over before it even began.
Later, Zainab admitted she lied. Guilt made her confess it was a mistake. The community gathered and begged Joseph’s family to forgive her. His family was poor and very religious. They didn’t press charges. They just shouted at her, warned her, and that was the end of it. She cried, Joseph said he forgave her but let’s be honest, he didn’t have a choice. In that kind of setting, when the whole community begs you, you’re expected to say yes.
I won’t lie and say I know what Joseph does now. But football would/might’ve changed his life and that of his family. And all of it was destroyed because of an accusation.
And if you doubt this story, go Jos and verify. People still remember.
False rape accusations should carry punishments as heavy as the crime itself. If you can destroy a man’s life with a lie, you deserve to rot under the full weight of the law.
