The more coaches of color that get legitimate opportunities, the more chances they will have to do what these two outstanding coaches of color have done. We should not be surprised by this, because black coaches can coach also.

Players: If your coach holds you accountable, you are VERY fortunate. A lot of coaches accept their players doing whatever they want, whenever they want with no consequences. Discipline, responsibility & accountability are life prep! If your coach cares that much, respect it!

Coaches need to provide a sense of inclusiveness and help each player feel a part of the team. However, this doesn’t mean you should tolerate slackers or bad teammates. You should push everyone to reach the same standards.

Most young high school athletes think “if I mess up academically as a freshmen I’ll fix it later”. This is likely deterimental to you! You can’t afford to mess up early under NCAA guidelines. Freshmen & Sophomore years in HS are arguably the most important! You must focus EARLY!

PLAYERS: When a coach doesn't play you, they aren't disrespecting you or hating on you. They are respecting your teammates and loving the team. Good coaches play the players that make up the best team and that are the most trusted team members. Become that kind of teammate.

I’ve heard many times: ‘Coach needs to put my child in a position where they can succeed.’ Sometimes all coach can do is put players in the correct position, and it’s on the player to succeed. If they lack skill and/or toughness, success isn’t likely. The game shows no mercy.

“My goal for spring practice — get the right guys on the bus. Get them in the right seats & get the wrong guys off the bus.”

Players: You’re not a great team because you work together. Anyone can occupy the same space. That doesn’t make them a team. You’re great because you trust, respect, care for each other. You depend on, need each other. You become great because you work better together than apart.

We create a standard for how we want to do things and everybody's got to buy into that standard or you really can't have any team chemistry. Mediocre people don't like high-achievers and high-achievers don't like mediocre people. – Nick Saban

Every high school player will be practicing 4-5 days/week with 1-2 games. If thats all you do, then you are doing the basic requirements for a HS player. Find time for extra shots, film, weight room, & extra conditioning. Always look for ways to separate yourself. #getBETTER
