When it’s easy to sink into despair at the state of the world, Serbia has provided a shaft of light. Autocracy and corruption do not always prevail. People can mobilise in the name of freedom, democracy and accountability. Tyrants and demagogues around the world take note…

"Most journalists who are in the business of unearthing new information have more than a few stories of discovering the fruits of their labor in the Times, as though it had fallen like manna." 👇
NEW: The Times’s Credit Crisis
A recent New York Times front-page feature on chemical plants in the Trump era had deep reporting, stark data visuals, and an uncanny resemblance to a smaller outlet’s earlier investigation. Was this a case of unacknowledged inspiration, a steroidal dose of Times exceptionalism, or sheer coincidence?

Many have wondered why the baby elephant recently rescued in Bagdogra, West Bengal, was rubbed with mud before being reunited with her mother. Forest teams may use mud mixed with elephant dung to help mask human scent picked up during handling and facilitate acceptance by the mother and herd. This practice is supported by the Field Manual for Managing Human-Elephant Conflict by Project Elephant, Wildlife Institute of India and WWF-India, while Tamil Nadu's 2023 SOP on Orphaned Elephant Calf Management also recommends using dung from the calf or herd and avoiding unfamiliar scents. Behind a heartwarming reunion lies well tested field knowledge and scientific evidence 👍 #elephants #wildliferescue

Mostly away, but this reminder of how precious our democracy is, from @lpolgreen, who cherished, befriended and reported solidly on India in the past:
"It is easy to harbor romantic notions about Indian democracy. It is a project never before attempted in human history — for so many people with so much diversity to live together by common assent, under a written constitution that guarantees rights for all. For the past 12 years, India has engaged in a different experiment, one all too willing to brush aside the unfulfilled aspirations of the Constitution in the name of material progress and Hindu pride.
But a new generation of Indians has risen up, insisting that the price of that trade is far too high. Armed only with witty slogans and astonishing bravery, these young people have revived their country’s glorious tradition of nonviolent dissent."

This is Zionism
This is the moment Channel 4 News Foreign Affairs Correspondent Secunder Kermani was charged at by a group of Israeli settlers in the Occupied West Bank.
The settlers have laid siege to a Palestinian home, while nearby Israeli soldiers keep watch but do not intervene.
Violent attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank have risen dramatically over the past two years, while Israel's government has approved a record number of new settlements.

Sylvia Plath was born on this day in 1932.
Though she is generally regarded as one of the great poets of the last century, her career as a painter is often neglected.
However, 'Plath's visual works of art should not be regarded as minor or inconsequential in the artist's career. By examining the author's early paintings, one identifies motifs and concerns that will later be reflected in her mature poetry, such as in her art poems. From the influence of subjectivity and personal history in the composition of a "confessional" painting or poem to the conflicting role of women in the 1950s, all these subjects seem to preoccupy Plath from an early age.'
