Can some/any organisation with a handle please make the connection between water usage and drought & the correlation between using AI and ways in which we need to conserve water? @GreenpeaceUK @TheGreenParty

On the necessity of natural observation.
The photos of desert-like parks & dried up rivers are some of the more obvious signs of drought, but there’s more subtle ones too. On tidal rivers across the South & East of England, as the flows down the river slow to a trickle, tides can push further & further up the estuary & the river itself. This can lead to significant changes to the natural ecosystem. On the Roding, as the salt concentrations increase, freshwater ecosystems are changing to saltwater ones this summer. Some willow & alder trees I’ve planted have died & the leaves on others are turning brown from salt poisoning. The change in salt will of course affect fish, invertebrates & other aquatic life, although this is harder to observe. Another curious change is that the river has gone muddy & turbid. This normally happens after heavy rain which carries mud from the fields surrounding the river; as no mud is washed in, the river water usually goes clear in the summer. During the drought, however, it appears that the lack of downriver flow is allowing tides to carry sediment from the estuary further up the river. In less than a week it has deposited a centimetre of fresh mud on my steps, so is potentially adding huge amounts of mud to the Thames estuary as a whole. These important changes are not even being monitored by any of the multi million pound budget agencies in charge of the Thames Estuary & it’s left to those who live on the river to observe & note the rapidly altering ecosystem of the river & how we might respond to it.

This Tuesday at 9.30am in a cavernous hall in York, a parliament older than parliament will vote on a motion that could decide the future of nature across a vast swathe of England.

That parliament is the General Synod – the ancient decision making body of the @churchofengland – and they'll be voting on whether to restore nature on 30% of the Church's huge holdings of land by 2030. The Church is a top ten landowner in England, owning land three times the size of Birmingham. But only 3.5% of it is managed with nature in mind, which is a huge shame. Even worse, large parts sit on lowland peat, releasing unjustifiably high amounts of carbon. The Church leadership and @ArchbishopSarah claim that a fiduciary duty to keep farming every square inch intensively, even in the areas which are not really productive farmland. But a landmark legal opinion from a top ecclesiastical KC says this is nonsense - there's nothing legally stopping them from joining the global push for ‘30x30’, the goal of restoring 30% of land and sea to a healthy state of nature by 2030, (shorturl.at/XydfR).

As so many farmers and investors are showing up and down the country: rewilding does offer a pathway to social and economic renewal in our less productive landscapes. Let’s hope the Church Synod recognises this and votes yes to 30x30 for the sake of the Church's future and for the future of nature in Britain.  Great work @wildcardrewild 👏

Dear People, if you know this action of @EnvAgency to be on the wrong side of nature, please write to the Environment Agency's Chief Executive [email protected] @envagency All grist to the cause. And grateful thanks to the River Roding Trust for all you do.
Good news! After decades of ignoring rampant environmental crime on the Roding, @EnvAgency has finally decided to act. Bad news! It’s not against Thames Water for illegally dumping billions of litres of sewage in the Roding, or the waste criminals who have dumped thousands of tonnes of rubbish on its banks, but against myself & a small volunteer charity for… restoring a river without a permit! Within a week of the magnificent work of River Roding Trust volunteers completing the arduous work of restoring 250 metres of the Aldersbrook this winter, EA investigators had been down to the site and rattled off a letter threatening us with prosecution for doing the work without a permit. This is despite the fact that the Trust have repeatedly asked the EA to do this vital work on the Aldersbrook themselves & they have refused. It is also despite the fact that they have not investigated the huge illegal sewage outlet on the Cranbrook a few hundred metres away, which illegally discharges 750,000,000 litres of raw sewage straight into the River Roding every year.

Incredible stuff from @LondonPortAuth. They patrol the foreshore to check people have a permit to look at the mud for old objects (& prosecute you if you don’t have one), but they don’t do any checks for water companies illegally putting sewage in the Thames, and have never brought a prosecution for illegal sewage dumping. We really need to replace them with guardians of the Thames who will actually look after the river.

It’s hard to believe that this stunning bluebell woodland is in London, a short walk from a Zone 3 Tube Station. It’s a reminder that our cities could & should be incredible natural Edens, with a bluebell woodland in every borough. Ugly & drab urban areas denuded of nature & beauty are a political choice.

As all of the ‘Green Party is no longer a party of the environment’ nonsense is starting up again, it’s worth noting this battle to save an ancient woodland in Kent. Gallagher Aggregates is proposing to destroy 124 acres of irreplaceable ancient woodland in order to build a quarry. If it goes ahead, this would represent a greater loss of ancient woodland than from HS2 & the Lower Thames Crossing *combined*. The politics here is interesting, with the campaign to save the wood being led by Stuart Jeffreys, Green leader of Maidstone Borough Council, and with the decision maker being Reform-run Kent County Council. Will Reform actually make good on their constant promises & talk to protect Britains history & natural beauty, or will they sell out Oaken Wood to make a cheap buck? kentonline.co.uk/maidstone/n…

Big congratulations to Wild Justice for bringing & winning this case. Dartmoor should be bursting with life & large tracts of restored temperate rainforest. Instead- in large part due to over grazing- it is in many places desolate & with less ecological richness than many urban areas. This case also points to the ancient truth that the so-called ‘tragedy of the commons’ is in fact a tragedy of the *unmanaged* commons and that we need to reform & balance commoners rights with the rights of nature to exist and flourish.
Good news - High Court rules parts of Dartmoor have been mismanaged! Overgrazing has been damaging protected sites on Dartmoor. Read the Press Release about our latest legal challenge: wildjustice.org.uk/dartmoor/…

And the Environment Agency is actually threatening to prosecute me for building this one, even though they haven’t prosecuted a single illegal sewage spill on my river. I feel like deregulating pond building is something we could agree on across the political spectrum

No further obfuscation @EnvAgency We know how badly you have let us down.
It’s interesting that the Environment Agency are apparently interested in ‘nature recovery’, as on my river they are threatening to prosecute me for building a pond without a permit, whilst not prosecuting a single one of the serious illegal sewage spills that have been going on for decades. It’s all about priorities I guess?

Now to the Royston Gardens outfall. This is a completely unpermitted illegal outfall spewing sewage at concentrations up to 27ppm ammonia into the River Roding at Wanstead Park, where children, families and dogs often paddle in the river. This outfall ‘only’ discharges 1.7 litres a second, but runs all the time, so really adds up. It illegally discharges 147,000 litres of sewage a day or 53,000,000 litres a year and has been doing so for years.

Now a more current one, with the Bancroft Rugby Ground CSO, which is discharging *right now*, having been spilling for over three weeks. The sewage is pretty concentrated at 27ppm ammonia and the volume is massive: a veritable waterfall of shit at over 100 litres a second. During the current spill alone, it has put 144,000,000 litres of sewage into the Roding. It can be found here: maps.app.goo.gl/JWkiYUZ8U1Ht…
