Welcome to Beech Academy

Nurture 2 have been working on the Stone Age in their Humanities lessons. They have been learning about how early man and hunting skills evolved. The class had great fun building Stonehenge out of materials that they could find in the classroom.

In Creative, Post-16 Westfield have been designing publications using their own illustrations. They started with an A7 zine folded from one piece of A4 and have moved onto a children’s book. They have thought about themes, style and characters and how we show these visually.

Westfield 1 have been working incredibly hard in Maths with our topic Algebra. Students have been able to expand double brackets, simplify them and solve equations with both terms on both sides with algebraic expressions. Westfield 1 have done phenomenally well and been resilient

In Music Nurture 1 have been learning Another One Bites the Dust using drum sticks and chairs as instruments. Pupils have been exploring how to keep a steady beat and follow a rhythm. We’ve focused on listening carefully, copying sequences and staying in tune with one another.

Nurture 3 are loving Forest Schools, learning about the different plants and wildlife and learning outside games such as camouflage hide and seek. They have been visiting different local areas and exploring, whilst learning about the local history.

This week in Creative the Year 7 group have had an introduction to technical drawing with our new creative teacher Miss Gregory. We've learnt about the importance of using rulers and sharp pencils to get the accuracy in our drawings and not pressing on with our pencils too hard.

A huge congratulations to our amazing Table Cricket team who finished 2nd place in the Regional Table Cricket Competition held at the Derby County Cricket Ground! 🏏🥈We are incredibly proud of the effort, sportsmanship and resilience they showed on the day. Well done team! 👏

A huge congratulations to Grace in Westfield Post-16 for achieving her ABRSM Grade 5 Violin certificate. Grace is passionate about her music and we all love to hear Grace play. Well done Grace 🎻

Westfield 2 have been working on an Open Awards unit on painting with acrylic and oil paint. This week they have been blending colours and created some amazing pieces with blended backgrounds and silhouettes.

In Humanities, Nurture 3 have started off the year thinking about what they would like to get better at as part of self-development and setting New Year's Resolutions. Students discussed how they might improve current skills or even begin a new hobby.

Due to the snow and condition of a lot of side roads in the local area, Beech Academy will be closed today.

Year 8 have been studying Hinduism in Humanities linked to their novel When the Mountains Roared. In this book Ruby and Praveen enjoy the festivities of the Holi festival which includes throwing Gulal powder (paint powder). All year 8 students had great fun throwing Gulal powder.

This half term, Year 7 have been looking at co-ordinates and shapes in Maths. We have done lots of practical activities like plotting coordinates on the board and around the room and making 3D shapes with different materials to really explore these themes.

Post 16 at Fairholme have been working on an Enterprise Project in BTEC Employability. They have designed, marketed and manufactured cold cups to sell in school and they have been doing a roaring trade! We are so proud of the organisation, creativity and teamwork! Well done :)

In Science, Year 8 have been learning about acids and alkalis. Students took part in an experiment where they were using the universal indicator to test things like hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, bicarbonate of soda, glucose, veg oil, salt solution, water and cornflour.
