This time we went “functional.” 🙂
After years studying pathological amyloids, we followed RIPK1/3 into the other side of aggregation - where amyloids help cells decide when to die.

Our latest paper is out! We built a large-scale mutational map of amylin to understand how sequence drives #amyloid formation, a process linked to type 2 #diabetes🩸📈📉. It’s a step towards connecting molecular mechanisms with human genetic variation in a systematic way.
🔬 Investigadores de l'#IBEC creen un mapa mutacional de l’amilina que mostra com certes mutacions poden accelerar o frenar la formació d’agregats tòxics vinculats a la diabetis tipus 2.

Big BIG congrats to @mbadiagraset . She led this work beautifully - thoughtful, rigorous, and relentless💪 .
There’s more coming from her! Stay tuned.
By coupling this with functional assays, we discover that necroptotic signaling requires a “sweet spot”🍭 of amyloid formation. Variants that disrupt this balance are rare in the human population, consistent with evolutionary sequence optimization.
@mamartin_ok mutagenised mouse and human RIPK1 & RIPK3, the proteins that assemble into amyloid structures to build the necrosome and signal inflammatory cell death 💀

Genomics job opportunities in Sweden! Our infrastructure has an open position for a postdoc with a focus on long-read sequencing, and a permanent (!) bioinformatician position in ancient DNA. Cutting-edge tech, great environment, work-life balance, nice country. Please RT!
New cocktail 🍹 in town - in collaboration with @BenLehner : Massive combinatorial mutagenesis + amyloid kinetics selection + thermodynamic modelling showing us the portrait 🎨 of an amyloid transition state. Read about it in this great thread by co-first author @immunobananna
Alzheimer’s disease 🧠starts with a molecular domino effect - but what triggers the first piece to fall?
In our new study we cracked open the black box of early protein aggregation, and the findings could reshape how we fight neurodegeneration. 🧵👇

Our lab @IBECBarcelona is hiring both 👩💻 and 🧪 profiles (or mixed!) to mechanistically probe disordered and aggregation prone proteins at scale using combinatorial strategies. Get in touch!!

La situació que vivim a Catalunya amb Rodalies és insostenible.
Més enllà de les inversions que s'estan fent actualment, necessitem trobar solucions immediates a un problema que li roba el temps i la vida als catalans i les catalanes.

every academic you meet is fighting their own battle. Make it worse by asking them how the writing is going
Very grateful to @FundacionLuzon & @CaixaResearch @FundlaCaixa for their support in this journey which I hope will bring my lab @IBECBarcelona , @LukeMcAlary & Bryony Thompson to make important contributions towards a systematic understanding of #ALS #ELA #MND
👏🏼 ¡ENHORABUENA!

HPV vaccines offer a rare opportunity to effectively eliminate cervical cancer.
By taking this opportunity, it’s possible to save the lives of hundreds of thousands of women each year.

ALT This chart, titled "Cervical cancer rates declined in England following national HPV vaccination programs," shows cumulative cases of cervical cancer per 100,000 women by age for birth cohorts from 1989 to 1999 in England. Each cohort, offered HPV vaccines at different ages, experienced different rates of cancer incidence by age 30. The unvaccinated 1989–1990 cohort had the highest incidence (blue), while the 1995–1999 cohort, vaccinated at ages 12–14, had the lowest (red). Data source: Milena Farcano et al. (2021), The Lancet. The chart was made by Saloni Dattani of Our World in Data.
