I worked on MS-DOS, but not this one! Microsoft has open-sourced MS-DOS 4.00 on Github, but it might not be what you think it is. MS-DOS 4.00 was an attempt at a multitasking MS-DOS, but OEMs weren't really interested, and it was only ever in limited release. So it's almost certainly not the one you used back in the day. MS-DOS 4.01, on the other hand, was the one you all know and "love". Actually, it was much maligned. It included the DOSSHELL. People did not love it, as opposed to MS-DOS 5 and 6, which were very well received! More info can be found on Scott Hanselman's site: hanselman.com/blog/open-sour……

Geoff Chappell passed away today on his own terms, surrounded by family and while his good humor remained intact. Please listen to a Beatles record and read a little assembly code in his honor.

While this may be the earliest, easily downloadable 64-bit build of Windows... 64-bit DEC Alpha releases of NT 5 (later renamed Windows 2000) were part of the daily build process. And some builds went out to DEC and others. Source: I tested those builds. Every doggone day.
Windows XP build 2210, from 2nd March 2000, is the earliest available build of a 64-bit edition of Windows. Designed for DEC Alpha, it predated Intel Itanium, which XP would eventually support. Its boot screen is notably just Windows 2000’s with “64” crudely spray painted on top.

Windows 98 builds 1511-1525, from early 1997, contain an unused shell (filename eshell.exe) in the setup files. It may be an early attempt at creating a media-focused UI, later introduced in Windows Media Center in Windows XP Media Center Edition (2002) (filename ehshell.exe). 📺

With all the AI buzz Microsoft Build is generating, I'd like to show you the magic 🪄 of AI Depth effects for desktop backgrounds that are coming to Windows 11 This is not a 100% seamless demo (app hosted) as the bits are still unfinished, but I'm sure it gets the message across

The name appears to have confused Microsoft itself as well, seeing as some early Windows Me builds actually include "Windows 2000 Millennium" banners in Help.

Windows 2000 (1999) was known as Windows NT 5 during development. It famously had no codename as, according to Windows team member Dave Thompson, "@jimallchin didn't like codenames". Its final name was arguably confusing, with the last 2 non-NT releases of Windows named 95 & 98.

So random that this (intended) behavior is literally documented in MS docs.

You can actually move the new file explorer with the gallery view open from the separation between the actual explorer window and the hosted xaml content, it looks like the previous page contents remain rendered in the dui view behind actually as well

Traces from 25300: A new address bar (+more) made in WinUI 3. Here's what its breadcrumb bar probably looks like. Note: due to so many things missing from the XBF, I can't guarantee it will look exactly like this, should be similar though. Also don't mind the Test button.
