MESSAGE FROM THE NATIONAL CHAIRPERSON ON THE OCCASION OF HER 70TH BIRTHDAY
Today, as I celebrate my 70th birthday, I do so with a heart full of gratitude to God for allowing me to live to see this special day. Turning 70 is truly an act of God, and I am deeply grateful for the gift of life and for the many blessings He has bestowed upon me.
First and foremost, I sincerely appreciate my family — my late parents, my late husband, my children, my daughters-in-laws, my grandchildren, my siblings and their families, my late brother, late sister, my late mother inlaw and my entire extended family and friends, both here in Kenya and abroad. Your love, prayers, encouragement and support have been an important part of my journey.
In a special way, I wish to thank the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization (MYWO) family in its entirety, our Patron, National and County officials, leaders and staff, ably led by the CEO and government officers accorded to us. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity God has given me to serve and lead this great organisation and to contribute to the empowerment and advancement of women across our country. Leadership to me has been both responsibility, service and privilege.
As I turn 70, I recognise that leadership is both a privilege and a responsibility. I thank God for choosing me to serve first as Civil Servant in first Kenya Government, Entrepreneur in Export Business, serving in MYWO and for giving me the opportunity to serve as a leader at this important time in our nation's history.
A Message to Kenya
As I celebrate my birthday, and which I share with the marking of 16 years since the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya, my message to our beloved country is simple: LOVE, PEACE AND RESPECT.
Let us respect the Head of State, the First Lady and the Government leaders. Let us also respect former President and also those in opposition, we are all brothers and sisters of the same Nation. Love must go beyond hate for us to co-exist.
As a people, we must learn to respect boundaries and understand that there are things we can say publicly and others that are better communicated privately. We can disagree, question and hold our leaders accountable, but we must do so with respect, love, dignity and responsibility as well as promote unity.
Our words have power. Let us use them to build our nation, not to divide it.
A Message to Women
My message to women is that we have a critical role to play in preserving peace and strengthening our families and communities.
Whenever there is conflict or instability in society, women and children are often among those who suffer the most. We therefore cannot remain silent.
Let us arise and pray. Let us preach love, peace and respect in our homes, communities and nation. Let us teach our children the values of tolerance, dignity, kindness and respect.
Women have the power to influence families, communities and the nation. Let us use that power positively.
As I celebrate 70 years of God's faithfulness, I pray that Kenya will remain a nation united in love, anchored in peace and guided by mutual respect.
Happy 70th Birthday to me, and to God be all the glory!

When Esther Wanjiku was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in 2022, one of her biggest challenges was not only the diagnosis. It was affording the medicine she needed.
Herceptin cost about KSh135,000 at the time. Esther missed two treatments because she could not afford them and eventually turned to family, friends and a harambee to raise money for her care.
Her experience looks different today.
Dr Elias Melly, CEO of the National Cancer Institute of Kenya (@NCIKenya), says a partnership between the Ministry of Health and Roche reduced the cost of Herceptin to about KSh40,000, while the oncology benefits package under SHA has enabled eligible patients to access the medicine without additional out-of-pocket payment.
Esther has now received 40 doses of Herceptin and continues with her treatment.
For her, access to cancer medicines has meant the ability to keep going with treatment without returning to the financial struggle that marked the beginning of her journey.
Four years after her diagnosis, she says it simply: “Here I am, strong and happy.”

"Women's leadership is not a concession to women. It is a strategic necessity for an Africa that must now take her rightful place as a dignified, empowered player on the global stage. And so if we want to stop being pitied as a continent, we must stop pitying our women by giving them token positions of leadership."

Learning to perform an echocardiogram in class is one thing. Doing it with a patient and learning to recognise what is happening inside their heart is another.
Through an echocardiography training programme by the Kenya Cardiac Society, nurses, technicians and doctors are gaining hands-on experience in detecting and diagnosing cardiovascular conditions.
The 16-week programme combines classroom learning with practical training at Mwai Kibaki Referral Hospital, where trainees work with patients and use echocardiography equipment under the guidance of experienced instructors.
For trainees, that exposure means greater confidence and the ability to recognise a wider range of heart conditions when they return to their facilities.
Now in its seventh training cycle, the programme is helping expand the pool of healthcare workers with specialised cardiac diagnostic skills in Kenya.

Through a partnership between the Ministry of Health, @MOH_Kenya, and @Roche, the cost of Herceptin (trastuzumab) has been reduced from KSh 120,000 to KSh 40,000.
More importantly, the KSh 40,000 cost is fully covered by the Social Health Authority, @_shakenya, for eligible patients.
This has helped reduce the financial burden of breast cancer treatment. It also means that more patients can access this medicines when they need them.
