Iggulden says the potential for BHL to use AI to unlock data is huge. "AI is a real positive for BHL," he says. "The library contains vast quantities of taxonomic, geographical, ecological and specimen-level knowledge that remains inaccessible to modern computational workflows. So, unlocking this at scale would create new opportunities for biodiversity synthesis, collections linkage, historical ecological analysis and AI-assisted scientific discovery."

One of the many wonderful illustrations to be found in an 1837 “caterpillar calendar”, an entomological volume by the aptly named Christian Friedrich Vogel outlining which caterpillars appear each month. 📣 Calling all biodiversity orgs! Meise Botanic Garden is supporting the continuation of BHL by auditing/cancelling non-#OpenAccess journal subscriptions & diverting saved funds to BHL. Patricia Mergen calls other institutions to do the same 🧪 🌱 🌎 #LivingData2025 #ILoveBHL

Trait data is crucial to our understand of biodiversity & informing how species respond to climate change. So much of this essential data is in BHL, captured in species descriptions in the literature. Says Ben Scott @NHM_London at #LivingData2025 @biodivlibrary #ILoveBHL 🌱🧪🌿

What we know: DDOS attack–fended off for now; defacement of our website via JS library; breach of usernames/email/salted-encrypted passwords. What we’ve done: Disabled the JS library, scrubbing systems, upgrading security. Will share more as we know it.
