Now this was a long time ago. 2016 to be exact. No one I spoke to at the time had even heard of #Bitcoin so here I was with a 'crypto' visa debit card loaded with Bitcoin and turned it into cash.
I felt like i was robbing the bank at the time 🤣

Everyone is telling you to prepare for the big catastrophe. Stockpile food, hold cash, buy bitcoin, move somewhere defensible. Most people can't. Preparation is a purchase, and a lot of households have no surplus, no storage space, and no spare hours.
The best advice is to band together, and the reason isn't that ten families need less food. They don't. The gains come from everything that doesn't scale per person. One generator, one water filter, one person who knows first aid, one who can fix an engine, and enough hands to watch kids while others work.
The band also has to exist before the catastrophe. Trust doesn't form in a crisis, because that's when everyone has a reason to defect. When the heat wave hit Chicago in 1995, isolation predicted who died more than poverty did. The group is the preparation.
Bitcoin works the same way. Solo self-custody punishes small mistakes permanently, and small balances get eaten by fees. Shared custody among people who know each other spreads that risk. At the protocol layer, consensus is a band too. One node protects one person. Many independent nodes protect the rules for everyone.
The hard part is governance. Who holds the keys, who controls the shared stock, what happens when someone leaves. Get that right while things are calm, and you have something no individual stockpile can buy.

Michael Howell: Debt Is Compounding at 8%, "Bitcoin Probably More"
Howell says debt is growing exponentially in the West and the East, and refinancing it takes rising liquidity.
With debt compounding at about 8% a year, he expects Bitcoin and gold to compound at least that fast. "Bitcoin probably more."

895,266 bitcoin:native left to mine. Ever. That's 4.3% of all bitcoin, spread over the next 114 years. One company, $MSTR, holds almost that much today. I wonder when scarcity will start kicking in!

Please someone give me a reason as to why 🇬🇧 should not be mining Bitcoin.
I have not heard any politician from any political party mention this as a potential solution.
Aside from Bitcoin advocates and companies like @RenewaBlox the only person I have heard mention this solution is @jimmycarr !
Why the hell is that and where is the urgency as if it is good enough for Texas, Norway and Estonia then surely 🇬🇧 can benefit.

So there we have it. Probably the highest day ever in the BM at over £52 million
The final number tends to be a bit higher than the trading figure reported by LCP
This is what Connect & Manage has done... We spent £52 million because we had to throw away wind in Scotland that we built despite knowing we can't use it
Plus NESO not curtailing it before the DA auction meaning instead of gas plant self dispatching it has to be bid on in the BM

Authoritarianism is growing and coordinating.
At London's historic National Liberal Club, the Human Rights Foundation and Action for Democracy presented new research tracking authoritarian regimes and their connections.
Activists who have experienced repression firsthand also shared powerful accounts of their fight for freedom.
Thanks to @HRF and Action for Democracy for bringing researchers and those fighting authoritarianism together.
“Pushing the world in the right direction.”
A powerful message from Javier El-Hage of the Human Rights Foundation at last night's event in London, where researchers and democracy activists came together to discuss authoritarianism, the fight for freedom and some encouraging signs of change.
Hosted by the Human Rights Foundation and Action for Democracy at the historic National Liberal Club, the evening marked the relaunch of the Authoritarian Collaboration Index, now drawing on HRF's Tyranny Tracker.
I had the privilege of speaking with Javier, HRF's Chief Legal and Policy Officer, about the rise of authoritarianism, the importance of protecting individual freedoms and the work his team is doing through the Tyranny Tracker.
The project examines 179 countries and territories, assessing electoral competition, freedom of dissent and institutional accountability to determine whether governments are democratic, hybrid authoritarian or fully authoritarian.
Its findings are sobering. According to HRF, around three quarters of the world's population lives under authoritarian rule.
Javier spoke about the importance of protecting individual freedoms and understanding how governments restrict them. Despite the scale of the challenges, he remains optimistic that progress is being made.
I also interviewed Domonkos Kovács of Action for Democracy, whose Authoritarian Collaboration Index uses AI-assisted research to track cooperation between authoritarian actors across borders.
Domonkos pointed out that although authoritarianism has been advancing globally, recent political developments offer reasons for optimism.
Hungary and just days ago, Serbia have both seen entrenched political leaders defeated at the ballot box.
Some of the most moving contributions came from people who have experienced repression firsthand.
A Hong Kong democracy activist, now living in exile in Britain, described the dramatic erosion of freedoms in her home city. Hong Kong's governing authority is now classified as fully authoritarian by the Tyranny Tracker.
Despite everything, her message was hopeful:
“Hong Kong is not a lost cause.”
Then there was Jesús Armas, the Venezuelan opposition activist and former political prisoner who spent more than a year in detention after standing up for democracy.
He spoke with remarkable optimism about Venezuela's future and praised the people who continue fighting for freedom.
“One day Venezuela will be free.”
It's always a privilege to interview people working on questions of freedom and human rights, particularly when those discussions bring you face to face with people who have paid such a personal price for defending them.
Understanding how authoritarianism takes hold, how technology can strengthen state control and how we protect our freedoms before they're lost has never felt more important.
Last night's discussions were a reminder that authoritarianism is not inevitable and neither is its permanence.
Thank you to @HRF and Action For Democracy for bringing everyone together and for the opportunity to hear these perspectives firsthand.
"Not your keys, not your coins" made self-custody mainstream. But holding your own keys is only the baseline.
If KYC gatekeepers dictate how you acquire Bitcoin and hold a dossier on your identity, you’re still operating on someone else’s terms.
