Queen Amina of Zazzau is one of the most celebrated military leaders in African history, yet her story remains unfamiliar to many people outside Nigeria. Centuries before many of Europe’s most famous queens and generals, she built a reputation as a fearless commander whose leadership helped transform one of West Africa’s most powerful kingdoms. According to historical traditions, Queen Amina was born around 1533 into the royal family of the Hausa Kingdom of Zazzau, now known as Zaria in northern Nigeria. She was the daughter of Queen Bakwa Turunku, who ruled the kingdom during a period of growing prosperity. Unlike many royal women of her era, Amina developed a strong interest in military affairs and spent years training alongside seasoned warriors. She became skilled in horseback riding, weapons, battlefield tactics, and military leadership long before she inherited the throne. When Amina eventually became ruler, she dedicated much of her reign to expanding Zazzau’s influence. Historical accounts describe her leading an army of approximately 20,000 soldiers on campaigns that extended her kingdom’s reach across large parts of present day northern Nigeria and neighboring regions. These victories were not driven solely by conquest. They also secured important trade routes connecting the Hausa states with the trans Saharan trade network, allowing merchants to exchange goods such as gold, leather, textiles, salt, kola nuts, and other valuable commodities. One of Queen Amina’s greatest contributions was strengthening the defenses of towns under her control. She is traditionally credited with constructing massive earthen fortifications around settlements to protect them from invasion. These defensive walls became known as Ganuwar Amina, meaning “Amina’s Walls.” Although many have disappeared over time, sections of these historic walls are still remembered throughout northern Nigeria and remain an important symbol of her reign. Queen Amina’s influence extended beyond warfare. By securing trade routes and protecting commercial centers, she helped create greater economic stability throughout the region. Her leadership contributed to the growth of Zazzau as an important center of commerce and strengthened the political influence of the Hausa kingdoms during the sixteenth century. University of Mpumalanga is Reviewing Their 38 Foreign Lecturers Costing More Than R30 Million a Year After the Parliament Questioned Why Local Graduates Were Overlooked The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) is reviewing the appointments of 38 foreign academics after Parliament raised concerns about whether qualified South Africans were overlooked for university positions. According to Sunday World, Vice-Chancellor Professor Thenjiwe Meyiwa said the university is examining appointment records and processes to determine whether they complied with legislative and institutional requirements. The review follows an oversight visit by Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Higher Education to UMP’s Mbombela campus. UMP has 256 academic employees, comprising 218 South Africans and 38 foreign nationals. According to Sunday World, even if each foreign academic earned only UMP’s minimum lecturer remuneration, the combined salaries would amount to more than R30.4 million annually. Committee members questioned when the foreign academics were appointed and whether any had subsequently become naturalised South African citizens. Committee member Yanga Govana also raised concerns about unemployed South African graduates and questioned the concentration of foreign academics, including 10 in agriculture and nine in mathematical and science departments. UMP lecturers earn between about R800,000 and R1.5 million annually. Meyiwa said UMP is also reviewing its Appointment Policy and procedures governing foreign nationals. The university has already terminated the employment contracts of five foreign nationals during May and June 2026. She said further appropriate action would be taken if the review identifies problems, while ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, university policies and fair employment practices.
