I mean, for sure, they took proprietary tech to get a jump on the market. The need to pay a license fee to DFINITY at the minimum to resolve this. But they also caused colossal harm.

🚨DFINITY FOUNDER ALLEGES NEAR INTENTS STOLE PROPRIETARY CHAIN KEY TECH! DFINITY founder @dominic_w claims a key component of NEAR Intents relies on proprietary DFINITY threshold ECDSA (Chain Key) cryptography, licensed only for the Internet Computer. This follows his post yesterday questioning NEAR’s Confidential Intents, which he said runs on a separate permissioned chain with no real cryptography behind the privacy claims. He points to a 2022 DFINITY paper, GitHub activity showing NEAR attempting an emergency downgrade after ~2.5 years, and the involvement of a former DFINITY employee fired in 2021. Williams says the system is not decentralized and flags legal implications.

Someone just drew this to my attention. It's a post from NEAR, presumably in response to my previous post, and in fairness it must be shared. xitter.cf/NEARProtocol/status/21… Among the findings they have a dashboard that shows their server cluster now has 16, not 8 nodes as I was informed, and they are run by different parties. This does not, of course, reduce concerns about backdoors, the ability of NEAR to upgrade the software of those "MPC" nodes directly and the ability to use such software updates to extract the key shares if they wished, the use of a trusted dealer to distribute the private key shares in the first place, and all of the other things that a truly decentralized setup addresses. That being said: 1) Sharing keys over 16 nodes is much better than over 8 (we prefer around 50). 2) They state that the operators of these nodes include Sovereign AI, Bitwise, Nansen, Greenfield, Everstake, Near One, and Luganodes, which is good. It's not clear if there are 16 different operators though, which is what you want. 3) They reference a strong technical description of their TEE architecture github.com/near/mpc/blob/mai…. So long as this is implemented on the nodes, and the node operators are actively using attestation to check the software NEAR is running on these nodes, that reduces the risks involved. I am not aware of when they moved from 8 nodes to 16. None of this reduces our key concern that their system has been powered by our proprietary tech all this time. Further, their post also talks about another thing they have released in 2025: CKD, or Confidential Key Derivation. This is basically vetKeys, an Internet Computer technology that does exactly the same thing, and it works the same way too!! We published how to do this in 2023: eprint.iacr.org/2023/616 However, this isn't protected afaik, so they have no worries there, but they should have contacted us first AND referenced our work. That's the respectable way to work in the fields of computer science and open source. We wish NEAR well, but they cannot just steal proprietary DFINITY tech.

I remember a cryptocurrency space that used to have higher ideals. Satoshi did not set out to “solve users’ problems today.” What Sandeep would call “larpers” were the early adopters from 2012 and before, whom Satoshi won over, and who set out to establish the field we’re all in today. None of them built pragmatic solutions. There was nothing pragmatic about Ethereum. Or Zcash. It was due to their complete disregard for pragmatism that we’ve made it this far (scalable BFT, fast ZK) and we now stand to solve **tomorrow’s** problems (censorship, surveillance). The f*** outta here with “today’s problems.”
What @ilblackdragon and NEAR team has built is a pragmatic solution which solves users’ problems “today” and such solutions win the users, technically perfect solutions win larpers (that too for a short time, you can never satisfy them for long)

Why bother with technically perfect solutions when larping is the winning recipe in the blockchain space, trust him, nobody knows larping better 💀

“Pragmatic” is a nice way of saying “trust us, the operators are honest.” Duct tape also solves problems today, until it doesn’t 👍

Leading with “NEAR is up 8%” in a debate about real tech is crazy work 😂 All #ICP stats are public and verifiable, no guesswork needed. “Who’s building technology people actually use?” @UNDP x @dfinity: sovereign cloud and decentralized AI for public good @digitalauthpk x @dfinity: ChatT, Pakistan’s sovereign national messenger, running on ICP inside Pakistan and built to scale to hundreds of millions of users
NEAR is up 8%, and the privacy wars are getting ugly. $ICP critics claim NEAR's Confidential Intents relies on trusted operators, not true cryptographic privacy. $NEAR supporters fired back, accusing ICP of inflating its TPS numbers with internal calls. Two chains fighting over who's actually decentralized. But here's the real question... Who's building technology people actually use?

The internet just broke 🚨 @FBICyberDiv told companies to patch PHP, the language behind ~7 in 10 websites, or take their sites offline. @bamboohr went dark for 6 hours. On @dfinity's Internet Computer, a flaw like this gets fixed once, for every app 👇 #ICP
Two critical vulnerabilities have been identified in PHP, a widely used programming language that powers websites and web applications. These vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619) could allow malicious cyber actors to remotely execute code in PHP core, potentially compromising sensitive data and networks. The FBI urges organizations to take the following steps now: ➡️ If an immediate update is not feasible it is recommended that organizations take the system offline until it can be fully mitigated. ➡️ Immediately update affected PHP installations following the guidance on php.net. Inventory where PHP runs in your environment, prioritizing internet-facing systems and vendor products that bundle PHP. ➡️ Monitor web servers for suspicious activity, including PHP processes unexpectedly launching command shells or downloading files. Ensure appropriate process-monitoring capabilities are in place to help identify potential exploitation. ➡️ If you find signs of compromise, isolate affected systems, preserve your web server and PHP logs, and report it to your local FBI field office or ic3.gov. Those reports help us identify the actors involved and warn other organizations before they become victims. For the latest information, follow PHP’s announcement on php.net, CERT-EU Security Advisory 2026-018, and CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog.

Sit this one out, buddy. You claim to be a researcher but you judge $ICP numbers using a framework that works for other chains because all they can do is transfer tokens from A to B. ICP hosts full stack applications and much more. So in your case there are 2 options: A) You are just dumb B) You are ill intended and have a personal reason to mock ICP using a misleading analysis framework because it helps your bags. Which one is it, big man?

Yesterday, millions of @revolut users couldn't acces their money due a power failure at a @googlecloud data center near London. The solution: On @dfinity's Internet Computer, every app runs on nodes in different data centers. One goes dark, the rest carry on 👇 #ICP

This is craazy. I asked one of our PhD engineers to look into NEAR *Confidential* Intents wondering how they designed their system. Unredacted, word-for-word, this was his answer 😱😱😱 "Everything I found out about the privacy claims and confidential intents is so bad that it seems almost comical and I cannot believe what I am seeing. Apparently they run a completely separate instance of the protocol, which is called FAR (as an opposite to NEAR), and that has a permissioned operator set. The entire confidentiality claim seems to rest upon the fact that it is a permissioned chain and the nodes are trusted to keep things private, there doesn't seem to be any deep technology behind it and it also does not seem to be open source. The entities running the nodes are also not publicly known. I almost feel weird writing this because it is so absurdly bad that it feels like ... I don't know ... a simulation? I know the usual level of overpromising in Web3 but this is so many levels beyond believable that it still feels unreal."

Say you're at a café and the bill is 4.20 CHF. Scan the code at the till and OISY lets you pick which asset covers it. The price stays 4.20 CHF whichever you choose, and once you confirm, it's paid. That's OISY Pay (at participating stores, through Open CryptoPay).
