A Mac 512K, a modem, and the UT UMUG BBS directory created a massive shift in my worldview. AI gives me that same sense of wonder now. Doomerism flattens the present by steering people into nostalgia that ignores wonderment as a possibility.

We believe access to capable open-source cyber models is our constitutional right as Americans under the 2nd Amendment.
It is our duty as technologists and patriots to help protect the digital infrastructure that powers the world's largest economy.
As such, we’re serving our cyber models “at-cost”, in US data centers only, with ZDR enabled by default.
We do not plan to make money serving these models.
If you run a company that is considering how to best protect against cybercrime, reach out to me or @atbeme. We’d be happy to advise.

deepseek-v4.1-flash-1017-cyber is now available on @inference_net.
This is the first of several highly capable cyber models we'll release over the coming weeks.
We believe it is our duty as technologists to help people protect themselves and their digital properties from the current onslaught of cybercrime ravaging much of the world.

I’d sign an escrow-style deal or oath: pass a real check (I do X), get unlocked access (you allow Y). Think KYC plus a meaningful, mutually beneficial agreement, with real financial gain or consequences.
Adults with skin in the game should be able to do the actual red-teaming and hardening work white hats need right now.
OpenAI has a process. Anthropic’s classifiers still treat basic moves on your own software as cyber harm. Neither is enough yet.
This has been my daily experience since about a week prior to Fable being released publicly… I am dumbfounded.
I find it insane so many of us crossed paths in the night, and we’re only finding out once folks are like, “Turntables on Tuesday nights in the Tenderloin, Justice League this, Oakland that…” in replies.
Not trying to bait. This tracks with a big chunk of my early career working with Romanian developers as a PM and designer. They were open, took direction, and would just build and build and build (a lot like working with AI). Many US-based engineers said they don’t develop that way. I always viewed that ticket-only mindset as a commodity. Feels like history repeating itself.
This is the way...
I wrote this the other day: "The models still need supervision. I have to tell mine to use an Espressif breakout board with screw holes, not just dangling. A year ago I had to tell it to use worktrees, to open a PR before merging, and never to squash away history. That’s default behavior now. The hardware gap will close the same way, in months rather than years."
