About the Blue Hill Ave Transit Action Plan: mbta.com/projects/blue-hill-…
Our NO-HEAT project helped bring four cooling structures to Chelsea, Everett, and Revere. In @ChelseaGov_MA, a shaded bench at the bus stop at Everett Ave and Carter St gives people a cooler place to sit, with solar panels on the roof to charge their phones while they wait. – at Chelsea, MA
In Revere (@Revere311) a solar-powered shaded table sits near Susan B. Anthony Middle School and the playground at DiSalvo Park, providing a place for students to rest and families to get out of the heat. – at Revere, MA
We chose each site using our heat dataset and what residents told us on walk and bike audits. The data dashboard is public, so anyone can see which areas in their community most need similar interventions.

Our NO-HEAT project relied on strong partnerships with municipalities and community groups. Together, we combined heat data with local insights to understand and address heat exposure on our streets, sidewalks, and trails.

We also documented a day with students at Susan B. Anthony Middle School in Revere, hearing about their experiences and walking their routes around the school. That site is now home to a solar-powered, shaded table beside the playground on school grounds.
We’re grateful to our partners who helped make our NO-HEAT project possible: @BikeToTheSea, @WalkMass, @MassBike, @MysticMyRWA, @GreenRootsEJ, and the cities of @Revere311, @EverettGov_MA, @ChelseaGov_MA, and @Framingham_MA.

Our Executive Director, Tegin Teich, explains how we developed a Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) dataset through our NO-HEAT project that measures how the human body experiences extreme heat.

By combining this data with local mobility patterns, we can identify priority locations that would benefit from cooling interventions, like greenery or shaded benches.

The dashboard behind the analysis is public, and any community in the Boston region can use it to find areas where interventions will help make our region cooler and safer for everyone.
