HALLOWEEN (1978) - 9/10 6-year-old kills his sister. 15 years later, he comes home. No motive. No talking. Just walks. That white mask, that piano theme, Jamie Lee Curtis running for her life. John Carpenter invented slashers with this. 90 mins of pure, slow-burn dread.

My daughter is in fifth grade. Came home yesterday with a story. New girl in class. Immigrant family. Speaks limited English. Sits alone at lunch. Nobody talks to her. Not mean. Just easier to stick with friends you already have. My daughter sat with her. Didn’t speak the same language. Used Google Translate on her school iPad. Typed messages back and forth. Laughing at the translations. Learning words from each other. Sharing lunch. Making it work. Other kids noticed.

My coworker declined every single after-work invitation for two years. Drinks. Lunches. Birthday dinners. The Christmas party. Always polite. Always the same answer. Eventually, we stopped asking. Not because anyone was upset. We just assumed she preferred being alone. Last week we ended up working late together, and she looked at the calendar on my desk. "You guys stopped doing things after work?" I told her the truth. "We figured you weren't interested." She stared at the screen for a second.

My daughter's wedding dress was somewhere over Denver in a suitcase the airline could not find, and the wedding was at four o'clock the next day. We'd flown to the coast for it. Forty guests, a little inn on the water, a year of planning, and my daughter sitting on the hotel bed in her pajamas, not crying, which was worse. The airline said maybe tomorrow night. I went down to the lobby to call every bridal shop within fifty miles, and none of them could help by morning.

I TOLD MY ROOMMATE I WAS GAY AND HE STOPPED PRETENDING HE DIDN’T NOTICE We had been sharing the apartment for eight months. He was straight, loud about it, always talking about girls he was seeing. I kept my side quiet. One night after we both got home late he asked why I never brought anyone around. I said I was gay. He went still for a second, then laughed once and said he had already figured that out. After that the jokes changed. He started asking questions he had never asked before. What I liked. Whether I had been with guys. He said he was just curious. I answered some of them. A week later he came home drunk and sat on the edge of my bed. He said he had been thinking about it. He asked if I wanted to show him. I told him to sleep it off. He stayed anyway. Nothing happened that night. The next morning he acted normal. Two days later he asked again, sober this time. He said he wanted to know what it was like. I said no. He kept bringing it up in small ways...standing closer in the kitchen, leaving the bathroom door open, asking if I was “sure.” I kept saying I was. Last night he came into my room again. He sat down and said he was done asking. I looked at him for a long time. Then I told him to lock the door. He did. We did not talk much after that. In the morning he left early. He has not mentioned it since. I do not know if he will.

For years, I thought being a gay man meant my life would always be complicated. I grew up believing love was supposed to look a certain way. You met a woman, got married, had children, bought a house, and lived the life everyone expected. Anything outside that picture felt like something you had to hide. Then I met him. Our relationship started quietly. Dinner together. Long conversations that somehow lasted until 2 a.m. Falling asleep on the sofa while watching movies. Waking up beside the man I loved and realizing I didn't have to pretend anymore. There was something incredibly sweet about building a life with another man. We understood certain things without needing to explain them. We could talk about our insecurities, laugh about stupid things, cook together, argue over whose turn it was to clean, and then somehow end the night cuddled up like nothing happened. And yes, our physical relationship became part of that closeness too. It wasn't just about sex. It was about trust, affection, attraction, and feeling completely comfortable with someone who knew the real me. There was something beautiful about being able to be vulnerable with another man and still feel wanted, respected, and loved afterward. ---

Some people skip “hello” and go straight to the application form. Bro, at least let me know your name before asking for my position!
