It depends on the research field and topic. Different scientific disciplines have differing burdens of proof. But the core principle of proof is reproducibility by other scientists from separate research groups.

Scientists need to ensure that anything they produce as scientific work has any conflicts of interest very clearly stated. It is not just their research at stake. It is trust in the entirety of work we do as scientists at stake. Once trust is damaged it is very hard to earn back.

I still have the very first notes I ever made about Cortex. On a notebook given to me by my first mentor who sadly passed away from Covid in 2020. Reminds me how just important it is to support other startup founders like my mentor supported me at that early stage.
