The DUP’s present dilemma is reminiscent of the UUP’s between 1997 and early 2004. And I remember how relentless the DUP was in its mockery of Trimble and those who supported him.

Stormont Watch has been redesigned.
There's an audience for ideological and sectarian takes on the Assembly. This isn't that. It shows what happened: votes, bills and expenses, as published, with no side taken.
Less outrage, more facts.

This piece by @NewtonEmerson in Thursday’s @irish_news is, I think, an important read for the entirety of unionism.
"Unionism has never had a moment quite like Martin McGuinness’s “traitors to Ireland” rebuke to dissident republicans in 2009, a comparison that might seem unfair as so many of the circumstances were different.
"However, it is fair in one crucial respect: unionism never tells its hardline fringe to get stuffed, so inevitably the fringe keeps setting the agenda."

⚠️⁉️NEW: 'Unionists won't forgive if pro-union parties can't work together. No egos, no entitlement... I'm impatient for it to happen.'
🎥🎤@duponline Leader @GRobinsonDUP tells Chief Reporter @jamesgould23 that unionist voters 'will not forgive' if pro-union parties cannot find a way to cooperate ahead of the election.
👥Speaking ahead of his party conference, he says greater unionist cooperation must happen.
It's a phrase that has been talked about at Stormont for years. While cooperation has happened in some areas, a wider strategy has never come to fruition.
Mr Robinson says he is impatient for that to change.
It's understood there have been discussions with @uuponline Leader @JonBurrowsMLA and @TUVonline Leader @JimAllister.
With the DUP potentially facing challenges from other unionists in key constituencies, there may be a desire to have a strategy ironed out within the next few weeks.
More on-air and online.

Northern Ireland has changed. Our society isn't what it was 30 years ago.
The old divide of religion, catholic and protestant, in it's real and truest sense is largely gone, our arguments are not theological anymore.
Demographics have shifted, catholics hold a majority. This is true, this I do not fear. I am a Methodist, a protestant, I am an orange man. I will always be kind and courteous to my catholic brother or sister. Religion is not the great divider.
The GFA has failed too many. From the Creggan, to the Shankill, the peace dividend has failed to reach too many communities.
Poor housing, poor education outcomes but most glaringly of all, the disparity in life expectancy seen between these places and the likes of the Malone Road.
Our culture, and identity, is hugely important, but imagine what could be achieved if we approached our material conditions with the same energy expended on cultural issues.
Culture is hugely important. Though it doesn't keep the house warm. Perhaps we need to reflect on how our energy is expended, culture and material conditions are intertwined and we can focus on both at once.
I'll spell out it simply, if you are willing to take to the streets over cultural issues, then why not housing? why not education? These issues impact our communities just as much as cultural ones. Do our youth not deserve local jobs, local houses and the ability to raise a family in a safe community?
I am absolutely not saying cultural issues do not matter, I am saying cultural issues and material conditions are intertwined, you can't solve one without looking at the other.
