#DCIS is considered non-invasive but removing it precisely can help reduce repeat surgeries. We appreciate advocates like @mmejendouglas for helping patients understand their options. #StrongerTogether #CancerCare #PerimeterAI
DCIS, also known as Ductal Carcinoma In Situ, is considered Stage Zero breast cancer. It is often detected on a mammogram. In fact, before the widespread use of mammography, DCIS wasn’t as common. (bcrf.org/about-breast-cancer…) To understand more about DCIS, it is helpful to dig into each of the letters of the acronym. D: Ductal. This indicates where the abnormal cells are located. In DCIS, the abnormal cells are found in the milk ducts of the breast. C: Carcinoma. A carcinoma is a type of cancer that begins in the skin or the tissue linings of our organs. IS: in situ. This is a Latin term that means “in place.” In the case of DCIS, the abnormal (cancerous) cells have not spread or invaded the surrounding tissue. Surgical options for DCIS include a lumpectomy (with or without radiation) or a mastectomy. DCIS is often found on the margins in a lumpectomy and can be the cause of re-excisions, especially in younger women who have dense breasts. To learn more about DCIS treatment options, you can read my post here: jenniferadouglas.com/diagnos… #dcis #sponsored #strongertogether #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth

Why do I need another lumpectomy? Sometimes, after a breast-conserving surgery, you may get a call from your breast surgeon saying that they didn’t get clean margins during surgery.  If that happens, your surgeon may schedule you for another surgery– called a re-excision. Here’s why margins matter: Clean (or clear) margins are linked to better outcomes and lower recurrence in cancer. ( pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4009…)  So if there is any cancer on the margins, your surgeon may call you and schedule another surgery- called a re-excision. I’m honored to serve as an advisor to Perimeter, where the mission is supporting surgeons with better tools and improving outcomes for patients undergoing breast-conserving surgery.  On their website you can explore their resources about margins: perimetermed.com/patients/wh… If you are facing another surgery or re-excision, it is normal to feel sad and frustrated. I wrote a bit about some of the frustration I felt when my initial lumpectomy was delayed after my MRI here: jenniferadouglas.com/delays-… If you have faced another surgery, or a delay in your treatment, I’d love to know what helped you as you walked through that time. #patientadvocacy #breastcancerawareness #cancercare #bcsm #sponsoredpost

Did you know it can take up to 10 days to get a pathology report after surgery? If cancer cells are found at the margin, patients may need a second surgery—called a re-excision. That delay can mean more stress, more risk, and slower recovery.

My husband and I are both software engineers and each year we do a hackathon for my birthday where we build tools for those affected by cancer or in the oncology space- then open source them. Our next one is coming up next month. Any suggestions on what you’d like to see built?
