Broadside begins before the Revolution had a name. We borrowed a page from The Beggar's Opera and put Phillis Wheatley in charge. Her first task? Tell Dr. Joseph Warren to stop singing The Liberty Song so politely and sing it like he means it. That's where our story starts.🎭

What begins with a novel idea for the general's wife reveals one of the Revolution's most secret intelligence networks... then two redcoats enter the Green Dragon; in an instant, Mercy turns the scene into a play. Sometimes the safest place to hide conspiracy is in plain sight.🎭

Sam Adams used pseudonyms to challenge the Crown in the pages of the Boston Gazette. Writing under names like Vindex, Candidus, and Populus, Adams shaped public opinion while protecting his identity, proving that the battle for hearts and minds often began with the printed word.

Our original Boston tea party scene in Sarah Fulton's kitchen had issues, so we worked with the actor and their instinct led us to a more powerful moment: the point when colonists stopped thinking of themselves as British subjects and began thinking of themselves as Americans.🎭

Here are a few images from our opening performance of Broadside. It was an honor to bring this story to the stage as our country marked its 250th birthday, Broadside is a musical about ordinary Americans finding their voice. Thanks to everyone who joined us.

Turn the press into a witness stand. "Facts are stubborn things" and unlike the news, they don't change their story for more clicks.🎭

Before the first shot… there was the dock. Moored at Griffin's Warf is the Dartmouth, heavy with East India tea. The words travel fast here, from ship to shore, like the broadsides posted in town, the original social feed. Men debating taxes, rights, and what “liberty” means.

Before taxis there were carriages... In Colonial Boston, horse-drawn carriages served as the early taxi system. You might spot one rolling past Faneuil Hall or pulling up near Old South Meeting House with a broadside on back, wheels creaking and hooves striking the brick streets.

Before feeds and timelines… there was Nine Men’s Morris. Colonists played this strategy game using corn kernels on a scratched wooden board. You’d spot it in taverns, near Faneuil Hall, or along the docks at Griffin’s Wharf, quiet competition beneath debates about liberty.

It's 1770, you open the door of a tavern near Boston and the room hums with low voices, flickering candlelight and whispered debates about liberty. On the wall, a broadside, ink still wet, the original social meme. On stage a messy breakup, Britain and America, are losing trust.

A spark. 💥 251 years ago today, Dr. Joseph Warren sent Paul Revere riding to warn Samuel Adams & John Hancock, who were in Lexington. Lanterns, a midnight ride and the shot heard around the world! #BroadsideTheMusical

From scripts to sheet music to rehearsal schedules, we’ve gone digital. No stacks of paper, no outdated printouts, just shared files, real-time updates, and a smoother process. And for audiences? QR codes instead of programs. Scan, explore, enjoy. Less paper. More presence.

We got together at Regis University for blastoff a few days ago. We discussed logistics for this year's performances of Broadside and then read through the work with musical accompaniment; afterwards, it was over to Applebee's for some food. @edfringe @BroadsideShow #newmusical
