So one of my old footballing Middlesex mates, Ken Bates, has slipped over to the other side. There’s a lot to say about colourful Ken but one thing sticks out in my mind. On TVAM in the late 1980s I announced I was sponsoring the @middxfa Charity Cup and hiring Wembley Stadium for the final. Being Ealing, Middlesex born Ken rang up TVAM and said he would enter Chelsea into the Middlesex Charity Cup - that attracted Brentford, QPR, Spurs for future comps and raised a lot more money than usual for good causes. I was invited to Stamford Bridge many times thereafter: the last time I saw him was when I bumped into him in Venice. He was still the old unspoken Sagittarian he always was.
