Congratulations to the Democrats for victory in the midterms. The outcomes are a victory for democracy in the US and the world. A victory for accountability, the international rule of law and the UN Charter. A victory that shows how much the American value diversity. A victory for those who believe that relations between countries should be governed by predictability and mutual respect. We will continue working towards common ground.

Zambian football has lost of its finest. Fred Mwila is no more. Was fortunate to interview Mwila last year in his house near Chilanga. First ever Zambian to play in English football when he signed for @AstonVilla in 1969. Hope to include anecdotes from Mwila in my coming book.
.....Mwila had an unmatched football cv, as player and coach. Represented Zambia through a decade and later coached Botswana, Zambia, and the biggest clubs in the country. His name is mainly associated with @PowerDynamosFC

President Isaias Afwerki blasts AU and OAU as Dysfunctional and Irrelevant
** The African Union does not exist in any meaningful sense, and it will not produce solutions.
** Anyone who expects otherwise is simply ignoring the historical record.
** The OAU was established in the 1960s, after the decolonization process, at a time when aspirations across the continent were very high. People expected a great deal from it, yet it failed to deliver and proved dysfunctional.
** It was later replaced by another continental organization, the African Union. The AU has turned out to be even worse than the OAU.
** No one should wait for solutions from them. Expecting anything useful from these bodies is a complete waste of time.

On the 62nd year of Independence I thought I'd remind everyone about some fun facts about #Zambia and some facts about why it was important to break free of our colonial chains.
- Our Freedom Statue has a name - Zikomo Banda
- One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World is actually called Mosi-oa-tunya (the smoke that thunders) and this is the official name registered at UNESCO
- The 24th of October is the official date for the beginning of the Rainy Season. The date was chosen as it symbolised the washing away of the harsh dry season (colonialism) and the beginning of a new season - fresh and green (independence)
- At Independence Zambia had less than 100 University graduates
- Kalingalinga is chilaplapa for the place where seasonal workers would linger to get a job (ka linger linger) and for those in Kopola land, Chamboli was the mispronounced word for the location where the Boy Scouts of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland held their annual 'Jamboree'.
- Prior to independence Zambians were not allowed into shops or butcheries. We had to shop from a small window and we were not allowed to buy any prime cuts of beef, offals, brisket and oxtail only .... EVEN if we could afford it.
- It is still illegal to splash a pedestrian because colonial motorists used to deliberately splash us with their cars.
- Zambians were forced to have English first names under threat of imprisonment - hence our colourful English names like Landrover, Crankshaft, Pencil and Paper. It was most enforced in Eastern Province and part of 'parole' was planting mango trees, which is why there are millions of mango trees in Eastern Province (we tried to resist)
I could go on but 62 years on we now face an even bigger challenge and that is to lift millions of our citizens out of poverty. We need to put aside petty differences and all pull in the same direction.

The Waterstones Booksellers on Gower Street is one of my favorite places in London. Here, all my anxieties (many these days) and sense of doom disappear. It’s probably one of the biggest bookstores in London, extending across multiple floors. You will find any book here. I am always stunned at the number of new publications every day. People write in this part of the world. They write on anything. Would we be writing as quickly, as easily, and indiscriminately if we wrote in our first language? I had a #ZambiaKuchalo moment seeing Namwali’s On Morrison prominently placed.
If I ever decide to move here, this bookstore and the city’s life-affirming architecture will be the main reasons. After visiting the Tate Modern, particularly their breathtaking bookstore, I can’t help but feel that life might be passing us by in Zambia.
In times of pessimism in the media industry, dying newspapers and tricky transitions, it’s uplifting to find quality and affordable (print) African journalism, spanning investigative stories, thought-leaders, and independent continental coverage. Purchased in Longacres, Lusaka
