Why is arachnophobia so common? 🕷️ 👀
An interdisciplinary team at #UNL, powered by an NU Collaboration Initiative grant and the Community for Arthropod Research, Education and Materials Innovation, is investigating.

Such an exciting project to work on with the inimitable @GrattonCaterina @allydworetsky et al!
Ever wonder how people's brains differ from one another?
➡️ Individual differences in 🧠 organization commonly come in 2 forms: shifts in borders & 'ectopic intrusions' far from expected locations
Now out in @NatureNeuro, led by @allydworetsky

New meta-analysis out showing the a more positive interpretation/valence bias is linked with higher trait reappraisal: psycnet.apa.org/doiLanding?d…
Led by @nickharp1 in collaboration yet again with @anderouusberg and Twitter-less James Gross!

Following up on work showing that #mindfulness promotes a more positive valence bias, we recently found that the increased positivity was correlated with decreased symptoms of depression and anxiety! Another great paper led by @nickharp1!
New work out with @profmaitalneta ! We assessed valence bias and affective symptoms (depression, anxiety) throughout a mindfulness-based stress reduction program, and found that the degree of change in valence bias corresponded with change in symptoms:

These findings bring together work examining task control networks and individual differences in emotion. Super proud of this effort, led by Jordan Pierce @CANLab_UNL and in collaboration with @GrattonCaterina and others!

Rather than monitoring conflict, these cing-op regions (incl dACC and ant insula) show late responses only once a decision about valence has been made.
And *only* in the context of ambiguity, they show an additional response once the image is fully revealed.

The cingulo-opercular (task control) network was found to support more positive interpretations of ambiguity

We used a slow reveal paradigm to present emotional facial expressions in an MRI, and found new support for our initial negativity hypothesis (i.e., the default interpretation of emotional ambiguity is negative).

Unbelievably honored to be in this line-up.
Ten wonderful years of affective science at SAS, ten wonderful presidents. So much gratitude as we reflect on the society's growth in the past decade--and excitement looking ahead to the next decade of SAS! #AffectScience2023
