Many congratulations to @ucl Prof Sallie Baxendale on being shortlisted for the Maddox Prize for standing up for science. 'Baxendale told THE that being shortlisted for the Maddox Prize “isn’t just a personal vindication” given the standing of the prize in the scientific community. “It sends a message that scientific scrutiny is something to be encouraged, rather than feared,” she said. “I sincerely hope this recognition gives others the confidence to speak up, challenge unsupported claims and insist that evidence remains at the heart of decision-making, particularly in the field of gender medicine, but in all areas of medicine, where assumptions and misplaced certainty can have very real consequences for people’s lives.”' timeshighereducation.com/new…

"A UCL professor who has faced personal abuse and smear campaigns after she raised concerns over the impact of puberty blockers on young people’s brains has been shortlisted for the Maddox Prize for 'standing up for science'. "Sallie Baxendale, a neuropsychologist at UCL specialising in epilepsy and adolescent brain development, is the only UK academic on the eight-person shortlist for this year’s award, organised by Sense about Science."

A brilliant lecture by Dr @stellaomalley3 at the @CASCltd conference in Adelaide this weekend. Stella combined a bird’s-eye view of parental disempowerment with practical advice on how parents can reclaim their voice and support their children. She addressed the pernicious overstepping of teachers who socially transition children behind their parents’ backs, undermining the very people responsible for their care. She also gave a fascinating breakdown of the evidence (or lack thereof) underpinning medical gender treatments, highlighting just how flimsy it is and the inadequate follow-up of study participants. Stella highlighted the distinction between self-reported satisfaction and broader measures of wellbeing. Someone may report being happy with their transition, while outcomes such as stable housing, sustained relationships and employment can tell a more troubling story. One particularly confronting point was that, as evidence emerged of poor long-term outcomes for adults who had medically transitioned, the focus shifted towards transitioning children. Congratulations @Jilliantweeting on winning the CASC White Mouse Award for bravery this year. Well and truly deserved ❤️

Great to join Peta Credlin on @SkyNewsAust to discuss @rachelbaxendale’s exclusive interview with Genspect Executive Director, Dr @stellaomalley3, who has observed the culture of fear in Australia when it comes to discussing gender medicine. It’s not just that medical regulators like @Ahpra appear to be lock step with trans activist lobby group ACON. Across the country, laws banning conversion practices include ‘gender identity’, effectively legislating the ‘affirmation model’. We need law reform so parents and doctors can support children experiencing gender distress without fear of prosecution. I’m looking forward to hearing Dr O’Malley speak in Adelaide this October! 🔗 theaustralian.com.au/nation/…

“It’s a different level of fear and silencing that’s happening in Australia.” In this interview with The Australian, @stellaomalley3 explains why open discussion is essential to improving care for gender-distressed young people. Families deserve evidence-based, exploratory support, not a one-size-fits-all approach, and clinicians should be free to ask questions without fear. Read more at the link in our replies. ⬇️

I was interviewed by The @australian about the individuals caught up in transgender ideation. I’m truly honoured to be delivering a keynote address at this vitally important conference in Australia this October. “These were the most vulnerable kids,” Dr O’Malley said. “They were the ones who had been diagnosed from five and six and seven with autism and OCD and anxiety. They’d had eating disorders. Gender dysphoria was one of a list of diagnoses, and suddenly these kids were medicalising before their parents’ eyes, and they were like, ‘Oh my God, my kid knows nothing. They have never been kissed. They’ve never had a boyfriend. They’ve never had a girlfriend. They’ve never had friends. They are really vulnerable. What on earth is happening that doctors are saying it’s appropriate for them to be medicalised?’” theaustralian.com.au/nation/…
