3/3 : For AUDA-NEPAD, partnerships are not charity. They are strategy.
The discussions at #UCD today are proof that AUDA-NEPAD pushes for partnerships centred on mutual benefit, as equals, with knowledge flowing both ways.
Tomorrow's conference is where we push this further. Watch this space!

Africa’s food systems transformation is not built through commitments alone. It is built when those commitments reach farmers, communities, institutions and markets—and when countries have the practical support to turn ambition into action.
That is why the partnership between our AUDA-NEPAD and Ireland matters.
Through a new @Irish_Aid grant, we are supporting the early implementation of the CAADP Kampala Agenda—helping Member States and Regional Economic Communities align policies and investment plans, strengthen priority areas such as seed systems, nutrition, soil health and irrigation, and improve the way results are tracked and shared.
This support comes at a critical moment. Countries are responding to climate pressures, tighter financing conditions and growing demand for more resilient, inclusive and sustainable agrifood systems. Strategic, catalytic assistance can help transform national priorities into investment-ready action.
Today’s engagement was more than a review of progress. It was an opportunity to reaffirm a shared belief: Africa’s food systems can become more resilient, more productive and more inclusive when strong partnerships connect continental vision with country-level delivery.
We are grateful to Irish Aid for its continued partnership and looks forward to deepening collaboration in support of Africa’s food systems transformation.

From promising seeds to stronger harvests: Nigeria takes a bold step forward
For many Nigerian farmers, the challenge has not been the absence of high-performing maize hybrid varieties. It has been getting enough quality seed from the laboratory and seed system to the field.
That is about to change.
Last week in Abuja, we supported a stakeholder validation meeting on Nigeria’s National Guidelines on Biotechnology-based Hybrid Seed Systems (BbHSS)—a milestone that could help unlock the potential of modern plant-breeding technologies for farmers and food systems.
The two-day process brought together 42 participants from government ministries and agencies, the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), seed regulators, researchers, academia, civil society, farmer groups and other technical experts. The first day focused on strengthening the draft guidelines and agreeing on a work programme for outstanding regulatory matters. The second day brought the wider stakeholder community together for a guided review, dialogue, consensus building and validation of the final draft.
This successful conclusion follows a long journey of consultations and collaboration. It also reflects Nigeria’s position as one of Africa’s most established biosafety regulatory environments, with the institutional maturity to provide early, science-based and risk-proportionate guidance on emerging agricultural technologies.
As NBMA Director General Dr Fatima Suleiman-Zuntu, MD noted, “seed protection technologies are very important for Nigeria, a country with a growing population and an urgent need to increase agricultural productivity to improve food security and strengthen the livelihoods of our farmers.”
Once fully approved, the guidelines will provide a pathway for the safe use of BbHSS technology and help address critical constraints in manual hybrid seed production. In doing so, Nigeria is setting the pace for Africa: this is the first guideline on the continent specifically addressing the regulatory needs of Biotechnology-based Hybrid Seed Systems.
For our AUDA-NEPAD, this milestone demonstrates what is possible when science, policy and stakeholders come together around a shared vision: resilient agrifood systems, stronger seed systems and a more food-secure Africa.
It is a step forward for Nigeria—and a signal of progress for the continent.

Turning Continental Ambition into Action with Rwanda
On the margins of the @AGRA_Africa Africa Food Systems Forum, our CEO H.E. Ms @nardosbthomas met with Hon. @onduhungirehe, Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, to reaffirm a shared commitment to Africa’s transformation.
The conversation highlighted Rwanda’s growing role as a continental convening hub—from hosting the Africa Food Systems Forum and Africa HealthTech Summit to advancing regional cooperation in science, technology and innovation. It also celebrated Rwanda’s contribution to Africa’s institutional development, including its hosting of the African Medicines Agency headquarters and the African Seed and Biotechnology Partnership Platform.
With more than 40 of our projects and interventions underway in Rwanda across agriculture, infrastructure, health, human capital, and science and technology, the partnership is already delivering practical results aligned with Rwanda’s national priorities and Agenda 2063.
Looking ahead, both sides underscored the importance of stronger coordination, sustainable financing for continental institutions, and continued advocacy for regional integration. Discussions also explored the possibility of establishing an AUDA-NEPAD National Office in Rwanda—an opportunity to deepen national ownership, strengthen delivery, and bring technical support even closer to communities and institutions.
Rwanda is not only helping shape Africa’s conversations; it is helping turn continental ambition into action. We look forward to building on this partnership for a more integrated, resilient and prosperous Africa.

Development has never lacked ideas. It has lacked the willingness to trust the people who already have them.
Speaking today at the @RepairIntlDev on Amplifying Indigenous Development Initiatives from the Global Majority in Accra, #Ghana 🇬🇭, @AU_ECOSOCC Head of Secretariat Ambassador @WilCarew challenged long-standing assumptions about international development.
For too long, #development has been designed using standards and priorities set elsewhere, while communities with lived experience have been expected to fit into systems they did not create. Ambassador Carew argued that #Africa and the Global Majority do not have a shortage of knowledge, expertise, or solutions. What has too often been missing is the platform and institutional commitment to put those solutions at the center of decision-making.
As the @_AfricanUnion's citizen and civil society organ, ECOSOCC believes governance is stronger when organized citizens are part of the conversation from the beginning, not consulted after decisions have already been made.
Ambassador Carew also warned that efforts to decolonize development cannot succeed if indigenous voices continue to face barriers to participation through visa restrictions, economic exclusion, or unequal control over global agendas.
He concluded by inviting eligible #CivilSociety Organizations in the #Diaspora to apply for one of the 20 Diaspora seats in the 5th ECOSOCC Permanent General Assembly, giving them an opportunity to contribute directly to policy discussions within the African Union: connect.ecosocc.au.int.

Did You Know?
The African Union endorsed the #CorrectingtheMap of Africa Initiative , led by #Togo , to address historical distortions that shrink Africa's true size and influence.
Africa covers over 30 million km², 20% of the world's landmass, and is home to 1.4 billion people.
Togo has now taken the initiative to the UN, calling for the adoption of map projections that accurately reflect Africa's true scale and challenge the continued use of the Mercator projection.

2/3: Why is the workshop important?
✅ To ensure that the data collected from all countries is correct and reliable.
✅ To provide feedback that helps countries improve their systems where needed.
✅ To prepare a strong final continental report that reflects Africa’s progress in agriculture and food security. 🌾
This work matters because better data leads to better decisions—and those decisions translate into improved farming methods, stronger livelihoods, more food, and healthier communities across Africa. #CAADP

1/3: From March–June, together with the @_AfricanUnion & the RECs, we trained national experts to prepare for Africa’s 5th Biennial Review (BR) on #CAADP implementation. During this time, countries worked hard to collect, check, and analyse data to ensure that the information is accurate and complete. This data is vital—it shows how Africa is progressing in strengthening agriculture and food systems.
Building on this process, from 18–22 August 2025, experts from across the continent are meeting in Kampala for the Continental Data Cleaning and Validation Workshop. #Agenda2063
