We have ethical responsibilities to targeted species and to biodiversity, and we need to consider the well-being of both.

To better understand marine mammal bioaccumulation of legacy and unregulated CP and dechloranes we correlated with legacy POPs in multiple species from the Norwegian coast.
Surprising lack of overall correlation to relative trophic position.

Massively under-reported science story because there's so much going on right now but...it turns out that we might have figured out what's causing this very scary spike.
Quick thread, on how WE'VE BEEN ACCIDENTALLY GEOENGINEERING FOR DECADES...but then we stopped:

Bird nests made from anti-bird spikes! 🤯 Even for me as a nest researcher, these are the craziest bird nests I've ever seen. Today my paper came out on this rebellious behaviour. And it's like telling a joke...
A thread. 🧵

These went up 3 days ago, adjacent to a very sensitive ecological site. Obscenely powerful, super white and high Kelvin. Note the insects flocking into the light - most of these will have perished over night after failing to go about their normal life pollinating, mating etc 💡

Inspiring the next generation of biologists! Today our group member @CAndvik held a presentation at the @UniOslo open day about what it is like to study @biovitenskap at @unioslo_mn - and specifically her research on killer whales and pollutants. Lots of interested students!

Reviewing a paper that uses a shapiro-wilk test to see if their response variable is normally distributed before using linear regression. This is not necessary! Linear regression does not assume a normally distributed response, it's the residuals that are normally distributed.

ALT set.seed(3) n <- 500 # create covariate covariate <- runif(n, -10, 10) # generate response variable y <- rnorm(n, 1 + 2 * covariate, 5) # oh no, not normally distributed (p < 0.05)! shapiro.test(y) # Shapiro-Wilk normality test # # data: y # W = 0.98609, p-value = 0.0001039 # fit linear regession anyways m1 <- lm(y ~ covariate) # get model residuals, this is what we assume to be # normally distributed. m_resid <- resid(m1) # oh wow, normally distributed (p > 0.05)! shapiro.test(m_resid) # Shapiro-Wilk normality test # # data: m_resid # W = 0.99728, p-value = 0.5847

We used UK data to develop a methodology, which demonstrates marine mammals can be used as indicators to assess the health of European waters.
