Two things can be true. I support Josh. We’re well short of elite but it’s infinitely better than it was. Still, needing to play smarter, taking too many penalties - that hasn’t changed in his six years. Not sure if it will. That alone will continue to hold this program back.

Following the Ducks out here (not as a fan but an interested bystander) there are some parallels between them, Dan Lanning, the Vols and Josh Heupel this year. The Ducks are now done for the CFP. The Vols are still in play but… need to win out.

I’ve said this before and will offer it again. When Josh Heupel says in a presser some version of, “We as coaches need to get better” I’d like to ask him, “Coach what, specifically, do you mean you and your staff need to get better on because with as many things as your teams do right, I’ve seen the same mistakes - or lack of discipline - in many Tennessee games for six years.” I’ve asked that question, or versions of it, in other pressers I’ve been at when a coach has said that. Never disrespectfully! Just genuinely wanting to hear some specificity that allows us a better look into what he’s thinking.

Beyond frustrating beating down Alabama but not being able to then go on the road and take out a team begging to be beaten. Pick a reason it happened. I’m not gonna deny any of them. The 4th and 1 out of a timeout to ice the game, busted play… Brutal. Game would have been over.

Bishop is a damn beast. Period.

People complain about Rocky Top being played too much… I’ve heard enough of the rooster for a lifetime.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a game with three touchdowns called back because of penalties. Wow.

Seeing several great defensive adjustments from Knowles. The air is all but out of that stadium. Now would be an ideal time to march it down the field and stick it in the end zone. Vols 21-17, 8:29 in the 3rd.

Halftime Tennessee 21 South Carolina 17 Total yards Tennessee 179 South Carolina 209 Great adjustments by the Vols defense / offense in a tough environment. Nice clock management by CJH in the Vols final drive… and that’s saying something. Vols get the ball to start the half.

TD MATTHEWS! This is a damn impressive recovery for this team. Falling behind 14-0, outscoring Carolina 21-3 since! Tennessee 21-17, :24 in the half.

FG. I’ll take that. Defense bent a little but held tight. And got a break on the Sellers misfire. Carolina 17-14, 1:44 in the half.

TD Vols. Toss out the slow start, now we’ve got a game. Vols-Carolina 14-14, 8:06 in the half.

OK boys, let’s get a handle on this and even it up! That was a heck of a defensive play.

Biggest drive of the game. Needed that 7. Bishop is just a stud. George has had three poor misses that all should’ve been completions. Hopefully he settles in. Now, perhaps we can stop Mr. Sellers. South Carolina 14-7, 14:12 in the half.

I want to thank everyone for the many wonderful messages sent about last night’s debut Friday program. The best one I received: My older daughter, Caleigh. She was listening in Los Angeles and text saying she got emotional when she heard the original open for my program. She was only 6 years old when she first heard me putting that together but she remembered. She was there from day one and it really connected for her. It was the best text I got all night.
