So sorry to hear the news about the great Johnnie Walker. Not only was he a wonderful broadcaster but also a man of great personal strength and kindness.

I’ve digitally remastered Kenny Everett’s debut on BBC Local Radio following his sacking from Radio 1 in 1970. It’s being broadcast in full on Radio 4 Extra at 1000, 1600 + midnight for the 1st time since it was aired on Radio Bristol on June 12, 1971. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m00268…
White Christmas was written by Irving Berlin on a sunny day in California. "Not only is it the best song I ever wrote, it's the best song anybody ever wrote!" he famously said. The original (rarely heard) opening verse lyrics refer to sunshine and longing to be up North...
Irving Berlin's White Christmas. Sales of recordings of this song number some 100 million. Written for the movie Holiday Inn, it was originally recorded by Bing Crosby. Crosby's recording is responsible for 50% of the above sales figures.

High praise everywhere you look for the conclusion to Wolf Hall. Even more reason to listen to this beautifully made programme for @BBCRadio3, in which @wisemandebbie offers a fascinating insight into writing the music that soundtracked both series: bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00253c…

How did you learn the notes of the clefs? Me: 🎼 Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge Always; bass clef: Good Boys Deserve Fudge Always. Viola players use Alto clef (the middle one) but cellists also use Tenor clef where middle C is the 4th line from the bottom.

At this time of year the cry to "give me a cosy little corner" is going up all over. Is the festive season proving too much? Why not take some time out and look up Clarice Mayne? A panto stalwart, she was connected to anyone who was anyone in the #musichall.

As @frankcottrell_b says in the article, the solution is in our hands. Stop closing libraries. Retain school librarians and employ many more. Fund author visits to schools. Publishers, stop throwing cash at celebrities and focus instead on engaging young readers. We can fix this.
