The shilling is under pressure, and so are household budgets. Despite an emergency rate hike to 12% on 14 October, the shilling’s gains were quickly reversed. On 22 October, the Central Bank @BOU_Official mentioned that it was selling foreign currency to steady the market. What it means for you: ▪️ Imported goods and fuel can get more expensive ▪️ Transport and food prices may follow ▪️ Higher interest rates can raise the cost of borrowing ▪️ A weaker shilling can increase the cost of servicing external debt How can government protect household purchasing power while keeping essential public services funded? How do we steady the shilling? @CSBAGUGANDA ED @JuliusMukunda says the answer is boosting dollar inflows. More foreign currency means less depreciation pressure on the UGX. As captured in this #NBSUpdates #UG4All @mofpedU @SEATINIUGANDA @ACODE_Uganda @GovUganda
