Similar to Cruelty, if you’ve been following: Good posters must RESIST the urge to dress up their own self-affirmations as life advice to others. Examine yourself!
I've glorified poverty and dilapidation largely because I've always assumed I'd be poor forever regardless of what I did. I figured I might as well learn to get enthusiastic about poverty, dysfunction, and obscurity if it was inevitable. Now that I've escaped it, I ask myself: "What the hell do I do now?" What do I actually want? After years of training myself to "want" a poor life on the distant (rural) margins, now that I no longer have to do that I have no idea what it is that I actually want. Always, I've let my blackpilled perspective on my own station interrupt my ability to want anything. If it wasn't ultra-cheap, I simply forced myself to not want it, period. Now? I could realistically make it work almost anywhere with careful planning. Could get into all sorts of businesses, try anything, make any number of interesting or edifying gambles or ventures... this is solely because of careful, anxiety-inducing levels of fiscal caution and extreme frugality. If you've ever wondered why it is that I seem "all over the place," it's this exact thing. It's this combined with becoming a father and realizing that the dilapidation and poverty I've forced myself to "want" isn't actually what I want to give my kids.

hearing for the first time that novelist Patrick O'Brian (of _Master & Commander_ fame) invented much of his own biography, didn't know how to sail & had no practical experience doing it, wasn't Anglo-Irish gentry but rather English working class, barely educated, concealed his early marriage... Everything he learned about sailing & the 19th c was from obsessive research & reading books. O'Brian comes out to be a far more puzzling, eccentric, twisted, anachronistic figure who lived in isolation on a small hobby farm in France, deeply secretive, insecure, brooding, exiled, aloof, yet TOTALLY COMMITTED TO THE BIT. I like him even more now (am currently reading Master & Commander)

Alex kershaw’s book _Escape from the Deep_, about this incident, is unbelievably good. It focuses on the 9 survivors, the only men to ever use a Momsen lung to escape a sunken submarine… in this case they were 180 ft deep. The escape itself is very thoroughly detailed, but the book also covers the survivors’ POW experience in Japan, as well as postwar lives. The final scenes with Richard O’Kane, the Tang’s captain, are truly haunting.
Today in 1944 the USS Tang under Richard O'Kane (the top American submarine ace of the war) was sunk by the boat’s own malfunctioning torpedo. Although mostly corrected by this time, the U.S. submarine force had been plagued with faulty torpedoes since the war began. 🇺🇸⚓️🐬

Solutions not considered by the author of this dog-bites-man opinion piece. Forget about downsizing and reforming existing departments, which are dying on the vine anyway. The biggest mistake reformers could make would be to allow existing humanities departments to replace themselves. We need to do a complete reset [aka Renaissance] of the humanities outside union-controlled public high schools and 'progressive' colleges and universities. Fund university-level humanistic study only at civics institutes at public universities, with broad (not micromanaging) state oversight. These would be intended to train future leaders on the Ciceronian / Churchillian model. Also fund sound private institutions like @RalstonCollege and @UATX that care about the traditional humanities. Topline research in the humanities needs to be re-established in private institutes, accountable to the vision of founders via board oversight. This is the direction traditional reformers are going in already but there needs ot be a clear strategy.. @firstthingsmag @RalstonCollege @ufhamilton @UNCSCILL @CivitasInst @UTCivics @LawLiberty @BradleyFdn spectator.com/article/anybod…

When you investigate Donald Trump’s inexplicable, repeated appearances in time travel-related media, You start to understand that he’s a kind of temporal fixed point, a load-bearing causal node that multiple timelines require to stabilize around various sorts of reality-warping events. But it goes deeper than that. When you keep digging, you start wondering about the noncommittal official reports issued by the President’s uncle, John G Trump, following his review of Nicolai Tesla’s papers after Tesla’s death in 1943. Then you realize that Ingersoll Lockwood’s 1893 novel _Baron Trump’s Marvellous Underground Journey_ was inserted into our timeline *after* Prof. Trump’s work on the Tesla papers. The hollow earth plot device is basically a way of allegorizing the Trump family’s history of temporal manipulation (for instance, the novel presents a version of Prof. Trump’s reception of the Tesla papers in the scene when the elder Baron Trump acquires Don Fum’s secret manuscript. The Baron (or ‘Barron’) doesn’t travel underground… he’s traversing stacked histories. The Frozen Realm, the Land of Happy Forgetters—these are the stasis chambers & memory-erasing mechanisms of the Trumpian time control apparatus. The Trump family lives in & manipulates multiple timelines, seeding our own with artifacts, mementoes, instruction manuals, & control devices, & occasionally these timelines intersect with our own, leaking imprints & shadows into some of our most resonant, ‘adjacent’, ‘anticipatory’ media artifacts.
Aired October 27, 1990 Donald Trump discreetly planted in Twin Peaks. Not sure if you know how much time travel, alternate reality, and non-linear time took place in this show, but it was a lot. They HAD to add Trump in somewhere. It is a rule. Oct 27 is also the day Marty and Doc discovered the dystopian timeline Biff created. I was gonna wait until 10/27 to post but I'm tired of waiting. Across the board.

Even beyond her reprehensible and backward politics, Ilhan Omar is deeply unsympathetic because she was given the opportunity to start a new life in America yet her thirst for power has led her to risk everything. If I moved permanently to another country I wouldn’t even want my grandchildren telling the locals how to run the show. Omar is so lacking in humility that she was only in the country a few years and was already lecturing Americans while attacking their democratically elected presidents. She is anthrax in human form.
