What do plant aboveground traits tell us about fine root traits?
New paper @nature led by @unitartu members @riintamme @GuilleBuenoG @ToussaintAurele @MacroecologyUT @UtPlant, Sabrina Träger, Mari Moora, Martin Zobel plus @sdiazecology and @MunsonAlison

Check @EleonoraBeccari latest work in @NatureComms
We explored how adding root size traits shapes the big picture of plant strategies. Spoiler: aboveground & belowground sizes form a single allometric spectrum independent of leaf and root economics.

The tools we use in this paper can be particularly useful for people working with multidimensional trait spaces, which can be quite challenging
Congrats to @EleonoraBeccari! #PlantEcology #FunctionalDiversity

Plants strategies are diverse. Beccari & Carmona find that adding root size traits does not change the global structure of plant strategies, confirming that plant size follows a unified continuum of allometric investments.

📢What would happen if threatened mammals became extinct on 🏝️islands?
We looked into the consequences of species extinctions on the functional space of islands worldwide.
More details below, but you can read the full paper published today @GlobalChangeBio

Even after migrating. Anguish, stress, and a lot of time and energy invested to obtain an extension of the residence permit to be able to finish the PhD. Cambio de regulaciones… lamentablemente las guerras incentivan el nacionalismo 😕
Researchers from the global south face often-distressing immigration bureaucracy that most from the global north do not.
These steps can begin to counteract this inequity go.nature.com/3Jl5xx8

Intraspecific variation could impact competitive interaction among species. Yang et al. show that higher intraspecific variation in seedling traits & performance may enable competitively inferior plant species to coexist with competitively superior species

🌟After a long study, we found that competition induced higher intraspecific trait variability in inferior species than superior species. Big thanks to my collaborative mentors, Prof. Guochun Shen and Carlos P. Carmona, for their guidance and partnership.

We are reopening a search for a postdoc in my group. I am looking for a curious person with an interest in plant-soil / plant-insect interactions to join our large and diverse team (research-groups.usask.ca/ben…). 1/4

Our integrative approach proved more sensitive in describing global species diversity patterns. Few areas on Earth host high and unique proportions of multiple diversity facets and individual diversity facets contribute differently to multifaceted diversity across continents.

You had me at “funspace”
Do you work with traits? Would you like to create these fancy plots but they are too complex?
You can do them now (along with other analyses) with 'funspace', an R package created with @GiacomoPugliel1 and Nicola Pavanetto.
