Frazier Mountain β’ Grapevine β’ Los Padres National Forest
Good morning and Happy Halloween from Frazier Mountain! ππ²
Our biggest story today is the approaching Pacific storm. Rain is still expected this evening and overnight, although some forecast rainfall totals have come down.
High-wind advisories remain important along Interstate 5, existing Los Padres National Forest restrictions continue, and we have another remarkable California condor conservation milestone to celebrate.
π§οΈ 1. Halloween Storm: Rain Still Expected Tonight
@NWSHanford and @NWSLosAngeles continue to forecast rain across the region this weekend.
The most likely period for steadier precipitation remains Saturday evening into Sunday morning.
Some newer forecast guidance has reduced expected rainfall totals, but wet weather is still expected and timing can continue to shift.
For Frazier Mountain, tonight will be a good time to watch rainfall totals, humidity, wind direction, and peak gusts as the system moves through.

NWS Los Angeles:

π 2. Grapevine / I-5: High-Wind Advisories Continue
@CaltransHQ continues to report high-wind advisories along portions of Interstate 5 through the Grapevine.
Travel is not recommended for campers, trailers, or permit loads in advisory areas.
At the time of the latest highway report, no full closure of I-5 through the Grapevine was listed.
Rain arriving later today could add slick pavement and reduced visibility to the travel picture.

π₯ 3. Los Padres National Forest: Fire Danger Remains Very High
The U.S. Forest Service continues to list Very High fire danger across Los Padres National Forest.
Existing fire-use restrictions remain in effect, including limits on campfires outside designated areas.
Weekend rainfall does not automatically cancel those restrictions.
Current Los Padres alerts and fire-use information:
fs.usda.gov/r05/lospadres/alβ¦
π² 4. Mt. Pinos Ranger District: Dry Canyon Closure Remains Active
The existing Dry Canyon closure within the Mt. Pinos Ranger District remains in effect.
The closure includes designated areas around:
β’ Dome Springs Road (8N40)
β’ Trails 22W10, 22W11, and 22W13
β’ Dome Springs Campground
This is a continuing restriction, not a new closure announced today.
Check current Forest Service alerts and closure information before planning backcountry travel:
fs.usda.gov/r05/lospadres/alβ¦
π¦
5. California Condors: Another Major Conservation Milestone
San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance recently announced that its 200th California condor raised at the Safari Park has been released into native habitat.
The milestone bird was part of a group released into Yurok Country in Northern California through the Northern California Condor Restoration Program.
California condors once declined to only a few dozen surviving birds. Today, more than 600 survive worldwide, with many once again flying free in native habitat.
That is an extraordinary conservation achievement β and another reminder of what decades of persistence can accomplish. π¦

π‘ Todayβs CaLandBird Takeaway
Halloween nightβs approaching rain remains the main story.
For Frazier Mountain, weβll be watching rainfall timing and totals, wind direction, peak gusts, humidity, temperatures, and any changing conditions along the Grapevine.
Existing Los Padres restrictions remain in place, even with rain on the way.
And California condor recovery has reached another remarkable milestone β a pretty wonderful conservation story to close out October. π¦

π₯π An Unconventional Breakfast from CaLandBird Kitchen! π©·
Who says breakfast has to be eggs and bacon? π
This morningβs breakfast was a good old-fashioned grilled cheese sandwich made with our homemade sourdough bread from Ranger, my sourdough starter, and a side of frozen kiwi slices!
And can we talk about those kiwis for a minute? π₯βοΈ
Iβve become absolutely addicted to them! I slice them with the skin on, freeze them, and enjoy one kiwi every morning.
Hereβs my little secret: I let the slices thaw just enough that I can snap one in half, but theyβre still icy and slightly frozen. Theyβre like little natural fruit popsicles!
And theyβre surprisingly nutritious!
π₯ Packed with vitamin C
π₯ A good source of vitamin K
π₯ Contain vitamin E, folate, and potassium
π₯ Provide fiber, including extra fiber from eating the skin
π₯ Contain natural enzymes that help with protein digestion
I originally started eating them for the fiber, but now I look forward to them every morning! And that big Costco box doesnβt go to waste.
Sometimes the simplest things turn out to be the best discoveries.
And as for grilled cheese for breakfast? Around here, we make our own rules! ππ©·
Have you ever tried frozen kiwi? Because if you havenβt, you might be missing out!

π² CaLandBird Daily Briefing | Friday, October 30, 2026
Frazier Mountain β’ Grapevine β’ Los Padres National Forest
Good morning from Frazier Mountain! ππ²
Halloween weekendβs approaching storm is our main story today. Rain chances have increased, the higher elevations around Mount Pinos could see some snow, and wind remains something to watch along Interstate 5.
Here are todayβs five updates.
π§οΈ 1. Frazier Park: Halloween Weekend Rain Looking More Likely
@NWSHanford has increased confidence in weekend rainfall for the Frazier Mountain communities.
The current forecast calls for rain chances increasing Saturday and becoming highest Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Saturday night currently carries the strongest rain signal, with cooler temperatures continuing into Sunday.
For Halloween plans, the important thing to remember is that exact timing and rainfall totals can still shift as the system approaches.
NWS Hanford:
weather.gov/hnx/
βοΈ 2. Mount Pinos: Rain and Snow Possible at Higher Elevations
@NWSLosAngeles is forecasting a mix of rain and snow around the higher elevations of Mount Pinos and surrounding mountain areas during portions of the weekend.
At Frazier Parkβs elevation near 5,000 feet, rain remains the more likely outcome.
Higher elevations β including areas around Nordic Base β have a better chance of seeing winterlike conditions if temperatures and snow levels line up.
This is a forecast, not an observation of snow already occurring.
NWS Los Angeles:
weather.gov/lox/
π 3. Grapevine / I-5: Wind Advisories Continue
@CaltransHQ continues to report high-wind advisories along portions of Interstate 5 through the Grapevine.
Travel is not recommended for campers, trailers, or permit loads in advisory areas.
At the time of the latest highway report, no full closure of I-5 through the Grapevine was listed.
Rain developing over the weekend could add slick pavement and reduced visibility to the travel picture.
Check live traffic, incidents, closures, and cameras before heading out:

π₯π² 4. Los Padres National Forest: Restrictions & Dry Canyon Closure Continue
Existing fire-use restrictions remain in effect across Los Padres National Forest.
The Dry Canyon closure within the Mt. Pinos Ranger District also remains listed, including designated areas around Dome Springs Road, several trails, and Dome Springs Campground.
Weekend rainfall does not automatically cancel Forest Service restrictions or reopen closed recreation areas.
Check current Los Padres alerts and closure information before heading out:

5. Five Young California Condors Begin Their First Week in the Wild
The five young California condors released last Saturday at the San Simeon Condor Sanctuary are now beginning their first full week in the wild.
The newest members of the Central California flock are:
Obsidian (1333)
Serpentine (1339)
Marble (1345)
Pumice (1332)
Chert (1331)
All five successfully left the release enclosure, and conservation teams continue monitoring them as they adapt to life in the wild.
California condors once declined to just 27 surviving birds, making every successful release another meaningful step in the speciesβ recovery. π¦

π‘ Todayβs CaLandBird Takeaway
Halloween weekendβs approaching storm is the main thing to watch.
For Frazier Mountain, weβll be following rainfall timing and totals, wind direction, peak gusts, temperatures, and any developing travel impacts along the Grapevine.
Higher elevations around Mount Pinos may have an opportunity to see some snow while lower elevations remain primarily rain.
Existing Los Padres restrictions continue, and five young California condors are beginning their first week of freedom in the wild.

πΌπΏ California Native Spotlight β Brittlebush
A little sunshine growing right out of the desert!
Meet brittlebush (Encelia farinosa), a beautiful California native shrub with brilliant golden-yellow flowers and striking silvery-gray leaves.
πΌ Its tiny leaf hairs help reflect sunlight and reduce water loss in hot, dry environments.
π Its cheerful flowers attract native bees and other pollinators.
πΏ Brittlebush has a fascinating cultural history, including traditional uses by Indigenous peoples of the Southwest. Its resin and stems have served a variety of purposes.
βοΈ This resilient shrub thrives in sunny, well-drained desert environments and can bring a spectacular splash of yellow to otherwise dry landscapes.
Another wonderful reminder that California's native plants are perfectly capable of putting on a beautiful show without a lush green landscape!
Thank you, @ChaparralJournl, for sharing this beautiful native and its fascinating history! π

Brittlebush (Encelia farinosa) is a large, silvery shrub that grows easily in a patch of bare dirt and full sun.
The Cahuilla used it to soothe toothaches while cowboys used the stems for toothbrushes. Itβs a member of the aster family.

πΊπΏ California Native Spotlight β California Fuchsia
Sometimes the smallest flowers put on the biggest show!
Meet California fuchsia (Epilobium canum), also known as hummingbird trumpet. This beautiful California native perennial produces brilliant red-orange tubular flowers that hummingbirds absolutely love! β€οΈπ¦
πΏ A few fascinating facts:
πΊ Its tubular flowers are especially well suited to hummingbirds, whose long bills and tongues allow them to reach the nectar.
πΊ California fuchsia blooms primarily in late summer and fall, providing an important nectar source when many spring wildflowers have disappeared.
πΊ Its silvery-gray foliage helps it tolerate California's hot, dry summers.
πΊ It naturally occurs in parts of Southern California, including mountain and foothill habitats, and is a wonderful addition to a California native garden.
I love discovering plants that are not only beautiful but also play such an important role in supporting our wildlife.
Thank you, @ChaparralJournl, for sharing another lovely California native! πΏ

πΏ California Native Spotlight β Thickleaf Yerba Santa πΏ
Sometimes the most fascinating plants are growing right in our own backyard!
This is thickleaf yerba santa (Eriodictyon crassifolium), a California native shrub known for its soft, woolly leaves and beautiful clusters of lavender to purple flowers.
Yerba santa is well adapted to California's dry chaparral environments. Those fuzzy leaves help protect the plant from intense sunlight and reduce moisture loss. When blooming, its flowers provide nectar for visiting pollinators. ππ¦
The name yerba santa means "holy herb," reflecting the plant's long history of traditional medicinal use, including by Indigenous peoples of California.
π² Here on Frazier Mountain, I have quite a lot of it growing naturally on my property! I photographed some of those wonderful textured leaves earlier this month. It's another reminder of how much there is to discover without ever leaving home.
Thank you to @ChaparralJournl for sharing this lovely California native and inspiring another look at the plants growing around us!

Frazier Mountain β’ Grapevine β’ Los Padres National Forest
Good morning from Frazier Mountain! ππ²
Our biggest story remains the approaching Halloween weekend storm. Forecasters are still refining the timing and rainfall amounts, high-wind advisories remain important along Interstate 5, and existing Los Padres National Forest restrictions continue.
Todayβs positive nature story comes from new U.S. Forest Service research on western forest birds and habitat restoration.
π§οΈ 1. Halloween Weekend: Rain Still Expected
@NWSHanford and @NWSLosAngeles continue to monitor a Pacific storm expected to affect California this weekend.
Current forecasts still favor rain developing late Saturday into Sunday, although exact timing and rainfall totals remain uncertain.
For Frazier Mountain, Halloween activities and weekend travel could be affected if the wetter portion of the storm arrives Saturday evening.
This remains a forecast β not a storm warning.
NWS Hanford:
weather.gov/hnx/
NWS Los Angeles:
weather.gov/lox/
Check live traffic, incidents, closures, and cameras before heading out:
Caltrans QuickMap:
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/
I-5 highway conditions:
roads.dot.ca.gov/?roadnumberβ¦
π₯ 3. Los Padres National Forest: Fire Danger Remains Very High
The U.S. Forest Service continues to list Very High fire danger across Los Padres National Forest.
Existing fire-use restrictions remain in effect, including limits on campfires outside designated locations.
Recent rain does not automatically cancel these restrictions.
Current Los Padres alerts and fire restrictions:
fs.usda.gov/r05/lospadres/alβ¦
π² 4. Mt. Pinos Ranger District: Dry Canyon Closure Continues
The Dry Canyon closure within the Mt. Pinos Ranger District remains in effect.
The closure includes designated areas around:
β’ Dome Springs Road (8N40)
β’ Trails 22W10, 22W11, and 22W13
β’ Dome Springs Campground
This is an existing closure, not a new incident.
Check current Forest Service alerts and closure information before planning backcountry travel:
fs.usda.gov/r05/lospadres/alβ¦
π¦ 5. Wildlife Science: New Research Could Improve Forest Bird Conservation
A new U.S. Forest Service study examining white-headed woodpeckers found that habitat restoration does not produce the same results everywhere.
Researchers found that local climate conditions can sometimes influence bird population growth more strongly than certain habitat-management actions.
That matters because it can help conservation teams decide where restoration projects are most likely to benefit wildlife.
Itβs another reminder that healthy forests arenβt one-size-fits-all β climate, habitat, and species all interact differently from place to place.
U.S. Forest Service Research:
research.fs.usda.gov/
π‘ Todayβs CaLandBird Takeaway
The approaching Halloween weekend storm remains the main story to watch.
For Frazier Mountain, the priorities over the next few days will be rainfall timing, wind direction, peak gusts, humidity, and any travel impacts along the Grapevine.
Existing Los Padres restrictions remain important, even after recent rain.
And todayβs wildlife research is a good reminder that understanding the land means paying attention to the small differences that shape how animals live and thrive.
Forecasts tell us what could happen. Observations tell us what did happen.

Well, look who decided to take over the ALERTCalifornia camera overlooking Gorman today!

Red-tailed Hawks are magnificent birds of prey, often seen soaring over our mountains and grasslands, searching for rodents and other small animals.
