ALT A one-time GBBF Champion Beer of Britain, Black Cat is low on abv but high on flavour; pale & chocolate malts marry with traditional English Fuggles hops to deliver a full bodied brew with a creamy head, rich chocolate notes, moreish bitterness and smooth mouthfeel that makes you call for more another. These days it is as rare as hen's teeth in South Cheshire, so come and enjoy a pint or two at our traditional country inn. And we have 4 other classic brews, including the gorgeous Acorn Barnsley Bitter and Ludlow Gold.

ALT • Malt - Maris Otter pale malt and crystal malt • Hops - Challenger • “It is, quite simply, a wonderful beer. It is exceedingly pale (21-22 units colour), with just a hint of colour in its cheeks from the dash of crystal malt. It has a massive orange fruit aroma from the challengers, balanced by biscuity malt. Juicy malt and tart hops vie for attention in the mouth while the finish is tart and hoppy but well balanced by creamy malt. The bitterness rating is a substantial 36-38. The tangy fruit lingers on the back of the tongue until it develops a hint of orange liqueur.” Roger Protz - CAMRA

ALT At the Carden the good beer never stops. Today a mix of glorious Peerlss Oatmeal Stout, a wonderfully drinkable Big Hand Wombat IPA and the rare Spitting Feathers Empire IPA, not West Coast not East Coast but a terrific example of a traditional British brew. Timothy Taylors Landlord is a permanent ale, a deliciously drinkable traditional pale ale with a long history and the regular Peerless Triple Blond is such a lovely session blonde ale, at 4% , it just jumps over the bar - fresh, sprightly and enticing. Come and try for a mid week treat.

ALT Acorn Barnsley Gold (4.3% ABV) One of the original brews from the 23-year-old stable it’s named for the ‘gold’ of south Yorkshire – King Coal – it’s a smooth, golden best bitter which heartily endures in the face of the rise of more extreme hoppy brews. Bright golden with a slight amber hue and a creamy white head, it looks gorgeous before an aroma hit of fresh citrus zest, hints of grapefruit, orange peel, and floral hop, In the mouth there’s zesty citrus with subtle pale malt in the background for a perfect balance of fruity sweetness and slight herbal note followed by a refreshing clean, dry and crisp lingering bitterness. Beautifully drinkable. Try with Hereford Steak & Guest Ale Pie. Big Hand Super Tidy Pale Ale (4.0%abv); When the late founder Dave Shaw started off 12 years ago he believed that beer imbibing should be fun with friends. This brew perfectly fits that profile; British style pale ale with pale malt and gentle hops at a drinkable, moderate, strength.

ALT Acorn Brewery has brought us a new delight for the festivities – Quattro (4.5%) best bitter. This is a rich ruby tipple to please the traditionalists - and pair up wonderfully with Ideal with Slow Braised Shin Beef on our Christmas menu. There are four malts here – hence the name- for coffee on the nose and dark fruit notes and toffee on the tastebuds with a light finish from English hops. Some people think stout begins with a G and hails from Dublin. Not so. Stout was a common British tipple back in the 18th century, often with oysters. Independent brewers have revived the style. Peerless Oatmeal Stout (5%abv) is stand out. Dark as a black sabbath night, this is full bodied stout, with a rich and rounded mouthfeel from the oatmeal and dark malts creating toffee and caramel tones and sweetness with a morish bitterness from roasted malt. Very easy drinking for a bit of seasonal sociability or partnering with our King Scallops or with Pumpkin & Ginger Spiced Brulee.
