In January of 2021, Notre Dame offered a scholarship to a high school junior in Orange County, California. Their recruiting coordinator, Brian Polian, was the one who made the call. "He's the coach that actually offered me," the kid said that spring. Nineteen schools offered him in all. Oregon. UCLA, where his father had played. He had already been to South Bend twice, once for a Navy game, a visit set up by his old high school coach, a former Notre Dame linebacker. He played receiver and defensive back back then, and more than half of those nineteen offers were for the offensive half of him. He turned down all nineteen. His name is Cooper Barkate. He went to Harvard. "A place like Harvard, it really makes you love learning," he said later. "Harvard really pushed me to expand my horizons of what I wanted to learn." Three seasons in Cambridge, 113 catches, 1,742 yards, 14 touchdowns. As a junior in 2024 he went for 1,084 yards and 11 scores and made first team All-Ivy. Then he moved up a level and did the same thing. Duke, 2025, 14 starts in 14 games, 72 catches, 1,106 yards. Second team All-ACC. He caught five passes in the ACC Championship Game, which Duke won in overtime, and he scored in the Sun Bowl. In January of 2026 he entered the portal again, and this time he followed a quarterback. Darian Mensah had thrown him all those passes at Duke. The two of them went to look at Miami together and both of them signed. "He's my best friend, so it's been great," Barkate said. So he is 23 years old, on his third school, with 189 catches and 2,915 yards and 22 touchdowns behind him, and until this week he was the second option in his own offense. Malachi Toney has been the story in Coral Gables. 73 catches, 1,027 yards, 13 touchdowns, and he is 19. On Wednesday the reports came out that Toney needs surgery on his ankle and will be gone four to six weeks. Which leaves Barkate. 28 catches, 372 yards, four touchdowns, and now the first name on the scouting report instead of the second. "I'm just a gritty player, real smart," he said when he got to Miami. "I'm faster than people think." On SATURDAY, Miami plays Notre Dame. Notre Dame offered him in 2021, when he was a junior in high school and nobody knew whether he could play at this level. He went to Harvard to find out, and then to Duke, and the answer kept coming back the same. Now the best receiver Miami has available is the one who told them no in the first place, and he gets them on Saturday with the offense pointed at him.
